The September Medical Monday slot will focus on a condition named scoliosis.

Scoliosis is defined as the abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. Ordinarily, one’s spine is in a straight line from the base of the skull to the bottom of your buttock region. In some cases, this curve
changes shape and curves sideways, creating the abnormal curvature.

While some patients may experience very severe curvature of their spine the majority of the cases that are seen are mild in comparison.

When scoliosis is noted in pre-adolescent children, X-rays are often called on to monitor the progression of the curve.

Follow us, as we unravel all things related to scoliosis.

Are you continually carrying the kitchen sink in your handbag? Is your satchel causing your neck and back pain? Does your back pack hang off of one shoulder? Then check out some of these tips to improve your bag posture.

1. Remove non-essential items from your bag to ensure it is lighter in weight and not adding unnecessary strain to your neck.
2. Try and extend the strap on your hand bag and carry it across your body instead of one shoulder. This allows the weight to be evenly distributed.
3. Ensure your back pack is placed on both shoulders to reduce the strain of pulling on one side only.

Are you waking up with neck pain and headaches every morning? Perhaps your sleeping posture or pillow is to blame.

Sleeping on your back helps to evenly distribute weight on the spine but only if done with the best posture in mind.

Traditionally back sleepers require a thinner pillow than those who sleep on their sides. This ensures the neck is correctly aligned with your spine while you sleep. If your pillow is too high or too low it may create unnecessary additional strain on your neck muscles, potentially leading to headaches and neck pain.

JnJ vaccine done. What an organized team. Well done V4HCW, Sisonke and the PMB Mediclinic. We can be proud as South Africans. Hopefully this is one tiny step towards reaching the end of this pandemic or weakening its effects.
