Adelaide, Eastern Cape β€” A 42-year-old man is recovering in hospital after being shot during an early-morning incident on Queen Street in Adelaide. Police have confirmed that a case of attempted murder has been opened and a suspect has been arrested.

Family members confirmed that the victim was born on 1 December 1983. He sustained serious injuries during the shooting, including a bullet lodged in his stomach and a broken arm.

He is currently receiving treatment at Adelaide Hospital and is awaiting transfer by ambulance to a medical facility in East London for further medical care. According to his family, no surgery has been performed at this stage.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 AM at a local bed-and-breakfast on Queen Street.

According to information confirmed by the family, the victim alone approached another tenant to request that loud music be turned down while other occupants were asleep. Moments later, gunshots were fired.

The bed-and-breakfast has requested not to be named, citing concerns that publicity may negatively affect its business. Management has indicated it will fully cooperate with the police investigation.

Local police have confirmed that:

- Eleven spent shells were recovered at the scene

Authorities have not yet released details regarding the suspect’s first court appearance or the licensing status of the firearm involved.

Executive Mayor of Amathole District Municipality, Anele Ntsangani, addresses residents of KwaMaqoma amid ongoing protests over the 18-day water outage, as tensions remain high and calls for consistent water supply intensify.

KwaMaqoma Burns as Water Crisis Sparks Road Shutdowns Amid Water Crisis
By Lebo Mothlabane | 19 February 2026

KwaMaqoma in the Eastern Cape remains tense as residents enter day two of protests over a 17-day water outage. All major entrances into the town have been blocked, including the R67 from Mpofu (Seymour) and Makhanda (Grahamstown), and the R63 from Khobonqaba (Adelaide) and eDikeni (Alice). Traffic has stretched for more than a kilometre. Schools have been disrupted. Many workers have been unable to report for duty.

Residents say long water cuts have become common in KwaMaqoma. Each time taps run dry, water tankers are brought in β€” a system the Amathole District Municipality (ADM) has spent millions on over the years. Community members accuse the municipality of wasting money on contractors instead of fixing infrastructure. They allege pipes and pumps are left to deteriorate, benefiting private service providers. These allegations have not been independently verified by authorities.

Their demand is clear: no more trucks β€” water in the taps.

Police, including the Public Order Policing Unit, fired rubber bullets on the first day of protests. Several residents were treated for minor injuries.

In response to the article, ADM Communications Head Sisa Msiwa said key developments had not been included. According to the municipality, the Mayoral Committee Member and Portfolio Head for Water Services, accompanied by senior management, visited Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality to engage the community directly.

ADM further stated that a power supply fault β€” which interrupted water abstraction and pumping β€” has now been resolved. Water supply reportedly resumed from Monday in low-lying areas, with Newtown and surrounding areas receiving water incrementally as reservoirs recover. High-lying areas, the municipality says, will receive water last as part of the normal recovery sequence.

However, a community member, Zandile Tengela, confirmed municipal officials did arrive but were told to return only once water had been fully restored. β€œPeople don’t want explanations anymore. They want water,” she said.

Newtown residents have also joined the protest, blocking entrances on their side of town.

Across South Africa, water infrastructure failures are increasing, particularly in smaller municipalities battling ageing systems and financial strain. But for families in KwaMaqoma, the crisis is immediate and personal.

Water is a constitutional right. Until it flows consistently from the taps, residents say, the shutdown will continue.

This is a developing story.
