Spotting Scoliosis in the Summer ⛱️☀️

With the warmer months here, kids are spending more time in swimsuits and lighter clothing — making it easier to notice early signs of scoliosis.
Summer is often when parents first spot subtle changes in posture or symmetry. Knowing what to look for can make a big difference, helping identify scoliosis early and improving long-term outcomes, often reducing the need for surgery.

Keep an eye out for these signs 👇
👉 A visible curve in the spine
👉 One shoulder sitting higher than the other
👉 One hip appearing more prominent
👉 Rib cage sticking out on one side (especially from behind)
👉 Head not centred over the body
👉 Difficulty standing up straight
👉 Back pain
👉 One leg seeming shorter than the other
👉 Leg pain, tingling, or pins and needles

Most scoliosis screenings are quick, non-invasive visual checks that look for asymmetry in the spine.

If you’re concerned your child may have scoliosis, DM or contact us for guidance and support.

Supporting Your Child’s Progress with Serial Casting 💪🏻

Serial casting is an effective therapy that gently improves flexibility and movement for children with muscle tightness or limited mobility. Through a series of carefully applied casts, muscles are slowly stretched over time to enhance joint alignment and ease of motion.

This approach is especially helpful for children with stiffness, muscle imbalance, or difficulty moving freely. It can reduce the risk of contractures, promote better posture, and encourage more natural walking—helping your child stay active, confident, and comfortable every day.

DM or contact us for more information on serial casting.

Therapy doesn’t have to be complicated- playful moments build real skills 💛

Things we can target using pop tubes from our very own speech therapist:

💬 Language & Communication:
- Verbs: pull, push, stretch, twist, bend, shake, blow, connect, open, close
- Describing words: long/short, loud/quiet, fast/slow, big/small, colours
- Core words: more, help, open, close, go, stop

💬 Turn-taking & social connection:
- “my turn” → “your turn”, waiting & anticipation, passing between peers

💬 Early sounds:
- pop!, wow!, shh!, uh-oh!, brrr!, woo-woo!

A simple toy.
Endless language opportunities.
Little moments = big learning ✨

Save this for later and tag someone who loves simple + meaningful play 🌈🧡

💛 National Down Syndrome Awareness Day 💙
Today, we celebrate the lives, strengths, and achievements of individuals with Down syndrome, a day first declared by our late President Nelson Mandela.

✨ Did you know?
• Down syndrome occurs naturally, it’s not related to age, race, or background.
• Children with Down syndrome can thrive in inclusive classrooms and reach amazing milestones.
• With love, care, and opportunity, people with Down syndrome live long, meaningful, and fulfilling lives.

Today is about acceptance, inclusion, and dignity, a reminder to challenge stereotypes and embrace every person’s unique abilities.

Let’s stand proudly with Down Syndrome South Africa (DSSA) and families everywhere in creating a world where everyone is valued, included, and free to shine.
