Edie discusses big realisations moving from hospital recovery to rehab center to home.

“That’s why you need to get yourself hooked up with others asap. You need to find out that no, there are lots of others just like you, that you are actually quite normal.”

Part of Edie’s rehab program consisted of attending a support group run by peers. In the group, Edie saw people who had been living with paralysis for decades, coming to the group to share information with the newbies – some of whom attend the meeting still in their hospital gowns. Edie, with her background in education and team sports, joined as a peer-counseling ambassador.

We've put together a few tried-and-true tips for cathing at home or away. Anything you'd add to the list?

- If your home bathroom is used by guests, consider storing supplies in a decorative container or opaque storage

- Wrap your items in toilet paper so it's less noticeable when disposing

- Traveling with your catheter in a plastic bag provides an easier way to dispose of supplies after using, if a garbage disposal isn't nearby

“Catheters were key! I was in a rehab hospital in 1986 for over 3 months following my accident. I left there with red rubber catheters that you had to wash every time. That was all that I knew. When I was using and reusing the other catheters, I was getting a lot more infections. For years, I had to be on a maintenance antibiotic. You are never too young to do something amazing, and Eli has proven that time and again. From cathing to basketball captain, Eli (and Grammy) share how they've improved their community through sports and camaraderie.

If you want to know how something can be done, talk to Eli. He and his grandmother, Ann Guillotte, (aka Grammy), saw the need for a wheelchair basketball team in their home state. This duo made it happen.

“Me and Grammy were sitting there one day watching TV and I saw grown-ups playing basketball, and I thought hey, I’d really like to do this!” says Eli with supreme confidence.

Like many born with spina bifida, Eli uses catheters. It is on his wish list to be able to catheterize himself, which Ann also hopes to see.
