You are never too young to do something amazing, and Eli has proven that time and again. From cathing to basketball captain, Eli (and Grammy) share how they've improved their community through sports and camaraderie.

If you want to know how something can be done, talk to Eli. He and his grandmother, Ann Guillotte, (aka Grammy), saw the need for a wheelchair basketball team in their home state. This duo made it happen.

“Me and Grammy were sitting there one day watching TV and I saw grown-ups playing basketball, and I thought hey, I’d really like to do this!” says Eli with supreme confidence.

Like many born with spina bifida, Eli uses catheters. It is on his wish list to be able to catheterize himself, which Ann also hopes to see.

The fact that Richard is a C-5 quadriplegic means that holding a paintbrush might be his first challenge.

“I found that sticking the paintbrush handle into my regular wheelchair gloves worked pretty well. I know that some people hold the paintbrush in their mouths, but I like to use charcoal, and that wouldn’t work too well. It takes some patience and time, but more so, it takes getting out and doing things. Once you are actually experiencing it, you’ll find it really isn’t that different from it was before. When accidents happen, you just make it funny! Why trip over it? You just laugh, just make it funny.”

How important is it to stay hydrated?
Do you always need to keep track of input and output?
Will drinking less help you catherterise less?

Whether you're new to self cathing or have been cathing for some time, at no point should you drastically alter your daily intake of fluids. The body will continuously produce urine as you eat and drink, a process that slows during sleep, so we make the most urine during the waking hours.

Sandra faced the challenges of intermittent catheterisation, UTIs, and cathing while rowing head-on, becoming not just a rowing champion but a source of strength for the cathing community.

It’s hard not to be inspired by Sandra. But you’d expect that from a Paralympian rower, mother of two, and full-time patient support and training assistant at Convatec in Johannesburg, South Africa. As well as training nurses and doctors on how to use GentleCath™ with FeelClean Technology™, her role is also to “help inspire and motivate newly disabled people in rehab centers”, she says.
