You may be able to guess this answer, but do you know the reason behind the myth?

In general, staying hydrated is essential for keeping the body functioning at its optimal level. It also helps flush out bacteria and toxins from your system. Whether you’re new to self-cathing or have been cathing for some time, at no point should you drastically alter your daily intake of fluids. The body will continuously produce urine as you eat and drink, a process that slows during sleep, so we make the most urine during the waking hours.

You may think the less you drink, the fewer times you have to self-cath throughout the day. However, it is so important not to deprive your body of fluids. On average, it is recommended to drink around 6-8 8oz glasses of fluid per day 1. Some people will need more and others less.

Coated hydrophilic catheters contain PVP, an ingredient used in glue. GentleCath Glide™ with FeelClean Technology™ does not contain PVP - it is the first and only catheter with hydrophilic technology built in rather than added on, so it doesn't stick.

For some users, the initial pull to start removing the catheter is the most unpleasant part of the experience. FeelClean Technology™ improves the sensation of withdrawal, allowing users to get their catheter moving with just a gentle pull.

Edie discusses big realisations moving from hospital recovery to rehab center to home.

“That’s why you need to get yourself hooked up with others asap. You need to find out that no, there are lots of others just like you, that you are actually quite normal.”

Part of Edie’s rehab program consisted of attending a support group run by peers. In the group, Edie saw people who had been living with paralysis for decades, coming to the group to share information with the newbies – some of whom attend the meeting still in their hospital gowns. Edie, with her background in education and team sports, joined as a peer-counseling ambassador.

We've put together a few tried-and-true tips for cathing at home or away. Anything you'd add to the list?

- If your home bathroom is used by guests, consider storing supplies in a decorative container or opaque storage

- Wrap your items in toilet paper so it's less noticeable when disposing

- Traveling with your catheter in a plastic bag provides an easier way to dispose of supplies after using, if a garbage disposal isn't nearby

If you have questions or need personalised support, reach out to our care team at 010 880 3833 or infosa@convatec.com — we’re happy to help.

New to cathing in a wheelchair? Let us introduce you to Andy, an adaptive sports advocate (think water skiing, hand cycling and archery to name just a few) whose journey has taken him from car accident survivor to Land Meets Sea Sports Camp founder.

“Catheters were key! I was in a rehab hospital in 1986 for over 3 months following my accident. I left there with red rubber catheters that you had to wash every time. That was all that I knew. When I was using and reusing the other catheters, I was getting a lot more infections. For years, I had to be on a maintenance antibiotic. After I started using a sterile technique with the Cure Catheter Closed System, my infection rate went way down.”

Ready to take control of your cathing journey? Discover how the right catheter can make all the difference, just like it did for Andy: 010 880 3833 | infosa@convatec.com
