Dr’s Bloch & Partners Sandton Radiology have once again kept up with the latest technology and have recently upgraded their Mammography department at the Sandton Radiology Department with a new Hologic Dimensions Full Digital Mammography 3D Tomosynthesis and 2D Synthesized Imaging machine complimented with the Hologic Affirm Breast Biopsy Device now also offering 3D Biopsy. The 2D C-View Synthesized imaging allows for a far more comforting experience, all that is required is a Tomosynthesis image, then the software uses the 3D Data to create a sharp, crisp 2D image offering greater accuracy at a lower radiation dose to the patient.
Benefits of 3D Tomosynthesis Biopsy (images below):
✔️Tomosynthesis-guided core biopsy offers a number of benefits over traditional stereotactic biopsy. Since Tomosynthesis-guided biopsy is easily performed by Radiologists, it allows patients with benign concordant biopsy findings to avoid unnecessary surgery.
✔️Tomosynthesis-guided biopsy facilitates tissue diagnosis for Mammographic abnormalities seen on 2D and 3D Mammograms, including asymmetries, focal asymmetries, masses, architectural distortions, and calcifications. Tomosynthesis-guided biopsy also facilitates stereotactic biopsy of noncalcified abnormalities.
✔️Tomosynthesis-guided biopsies may also be more comfortable for patients. For Tomosynthesis-guided biopsies, the patient may be sitting or be in the right or left lateral decubitus position. It has been proven, that this range of options has improved patient comfort, especially for patients with back pain, respiratory problems, or difficulty with prone positioning, because it allows positioning according to the patient's needs and physical limitations.
✔️In addition, Tomosynthesis-guided biopsy may be helpful in sampling of the very far posterior lesions that are difficult to get to with the traditional 2D stereotactic biopsy. This is largely felt to be related to the angle of the needle in the upright Tomosynthesis-guided biopsy units.
These additional tool allows the Radiologist to have easy access to the lesion if it is picked up on the Tomosynthesis image.
The Radiologists feel very confident reporting on such high-quality images giving them the opportunity to give the best possible diagnosis to their patients and having the reassurance to ensure the best treatment for their patients.
In South Africa breast cancer mortality remains one of the highest for women aged between 40 and 55 years of age. Mammography has played a substantial role in reducing the mortality rate and is recognized as the most effective method for early detection. Early detection of breast cancer in patient’s means faster intervention and dramatically improved survival rates and image quality is the key to early detection.
The staff at Sandton Radiology invite you to book your Mammogram during this “Breast Awareness Month” at their Female Imaging Clinic, offering a warm and serene environment, with each patient being treated with kindness, care and great compassion.
