Do we even understand what termination of pregnancy is? A good read below:
✔️Abortion is the removal of pregnancy tissue, products of conception or the fetus and placenta FROM THE UTERUS.
➡️It can be induced or spontaneous.
✔️Induced abortion ends a pregnancy with medication or a medical procedure (ie uterine evacuation)
➡️It's also known as a termination of pregnancy.
➡️It is done for medical or nonmedical reasons.
✔️A spontaneous abortion, or miscarriage, occurs when the pregnancy ends without medical intervention before 20 weeks. Types include:
➡️Incomplete🚨—>vaginal bleeding, open cervical os and partial loss of products of conception.
➡️Inevitable🚨—>vaginal bleeding, open cervical os and embryonic (8 weeks) cardiac activity.
➡️Missed—>nonviable intrauterine pregnancy that has been retained within the uterus. There is no vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, passage of tissue, or cervical changes present. Typically, the only sign is a missed period. An anembryonic pregnancy is included.
➡️Threatened—>vaginal bleeding, closed cervical os and embryonic or fetal cardiac activity.
➡️Complete—>vaginal bleeding, open or closed cervical os with complete loss of products of conception.
✔️Management or treatment of the different types of spontaneous abortion may require the use of medications or medical procedures that are identical to those used for induced abortion.
✔️Septic abortion🚨refers to any abortion, spontaneous or induced, that is complicated by uterine infection, including endometritis.
➡️It typically refers to pregnancies of less than 20 weeks.
➡️Management includes recognition of infection, broad-spectrum antibiotics, IV fluid, and removal of infected intrauterine tissue.
✔️Ectopic pregnancy🚨(EP) is when a fertilized egg attaches somewhere else in the body, usually in the fallopian tube.
➡️EP treatment is NOT THE SAME AS ABORTION since the products of conception are NOT IN THE UTERUS.
➡️A pregnancy won’t survive if it’s ectopic because a fertilized egg can’t grow fully outside the uterus; it is a NONVIABLE pregnancy.
➡️Treatment is with medicine or surgery.
🚨Can be a life-threatening emergency!
