"Why am I doing this with my life?!?"
The importance of developing purpose and meaning independent of outside influence.
When we have a conversation about purpose, goals, values, and what your vision for your life is, it is critically important that these are authentically yours, and not the societal/cultural programming that is all around us daily. We get messages from people all around us, at work, our friends, our families, and even strangers, on what we should be doing with our lives. However, if this is not actually what you want to be doing, it can lead to significant internal discontent and suffering.
🟢One of the biggest sources of cultural/societal programming is the media (including social media), it can shape a person's purpose and values in several ways:
1. Media portrayals can impact how individuals perceive themselves, their bodies, and their place in the world.
2. Media can promote certain values, such as materialism, beauty standards, or success metrics, which can influence an individual's personal values.
3. Celebrities, influencers, and thought leaders can inspire and shape individuals' aspirations, goals, and values.
4. Media narratives can shape individuals' understanding of themselves and their place in the world, influencing their sense of purpose.
5. Social media platforms can foster comparison and competition, potentially leading to feelings of inadequacy or driving individuals to pursue certain goals or values.
🟠To mitigate potential negative effects, it's essential to:
1. Consume media critically, recognize biases, agendas, and potential manipulation.
2. Seek diverse perspectives and exposing yourself to various viewpoints and narratives.
3. Set boundaries around screen time, prioritize real-life connections and experiences.
4. Reflect on your values and purpose, regularly evaluate your values and purpose, ensuring they align with your authentic self.
Ask yourself: “Is this what I want? Or am I only doing this because somebody told me it was a good idea?” Often if you ask someone why they want to do something, or why they believe something, and they can’t give you a proper answer, it’s because they don’t really know, they’ve just picked up the idea somewhere and they’re following it without giving it any further thought.
🟣Authenticity and introspection seem to be an antidote for this; it can help individuals develop their own purpose and values by:
1. Tuning into their inner voice. Introspection helps individuals connect with their thoughts, feelings, and desires, allowing them to distinguish between internal desires and external influences.
2. Questioning societal norms. Authenticity encourages individuals to critically evaluate societal expectations and media portrayals, rather than blindly accepting them.
3. Discovering personal values: Through introspection, individuals can identify their core values, passions, and strengths, which can inform their purpose and decision-making.
4. Embracing individuality. Authenticity allows individuals to celebrate their unique experiences, perspectives, and strengths, rather than trying to conform to external standards.
5. Developing self-awareness. Introspection fosters self-awareness, enabling individuals to recognize when they're being influenced by external factors and make intentional choices.
🔵How can one cultivate and practice authenticity and introspection?
1. Practice self-reflection. Regularly take time to explore your thoughts, feelings, and values.
2. Engage in mindfulness and cultivate mindfulness practices, such as meditation or journaling, to increase self-awareness.
3. Seeking out diverse perspectives, expose yourself to various viewpoints and experiences to broaden your understanding.
4. Challenge assumptions. Regularly question your own assumptions and biases.
5. Cultivate an attitude of humility, it is ok to admit not knowing all the answers, and it’s ok to seek out the answers that make sense to you.
By embracing authenticity and introspection, individuals can develop a stronger sense of purpose and values that align with their true selves.
