At this morning’s BHF workshop, industry leaders came together to advance the EquiAxis Initiative, a collaborative response to one of our toughest challenges: funding high-cost, low-incidence treatments like rare and catastrophic diseases.

Why EquiAxis matters:
• It’s a voluntary, industry-owned risk-pooling platform
• Enables schemes to share liability for exceptional claims
• Enhances access to essential care while protecting solvency
• Strengthens healthcare resilience across South Africa and the SADC region

This initiative marks a strategic shift — placing equity, sustainability, and patient outcomes at the centre of funding decisions.

Thank you to the funders, regulators, clinicians, patient voices, actuaries, and partners who shaped today’s discussions. Together, we are reimagining what’s possible in healthcare.

WATCH: Charlton Murove's interview on eNCA, where he discusses the government's plans to phase out medical scheme tax credits. A move that will ultimately affect affordability for low- and middle-income earners, not just high-income groups.

This follows remarks by Deputy Director-General for NHI, Dr Nicholas Crisp, in a briefing to Parliament, where he confirmed that discussions with Treasury are underway to gradually withdraw medical scheme tax credits.

The shot could bring an end to Aids if enough people take it. The jab, which the health department could start rolling...
