Confidence is Contagious

The impact of coaching doesn’t stop with the individual. When women and emerging leaders grow in confidence, their teams benefit. They lead with empathy, engage with authenticity, and inspire others to step up. They question the status quo, challenge groupthink, and bring new energy to organisational strategy.

At SMINC, we’ve seen first-hand how confidence unlocks leadership potential. Our clients aren’t just finding their voice, they’re using it to build stronger, more human-centred organisations.

Inclusion isn’t achieved by chance. It’s built through intentional investment in people and coaching is one of the most effective ways to empower those who have historically been overlooked. By supporting women and emerging leaders through structured, values-based coaching, organisations can shape a leadership culture that’s not only more diverse but also more courageous, connected, and confident.

Now is the time to stop treating confidence as an individual issue and start supporting it as a collective priority. With coaching, we can change not just WHO leads, but HOW they lead.

Supporting Inclusive Leadership Development

Coaching alone can’t fix systemic inequality but it can be part of a broader strategy to create more inclusive leadership pipelines. At SMINC, we encourage organisations to complement coaching with:
• Structured mentorship and sponsorship programmes: Pairing emerging leaders with senior advocates helps ensure they’re not only prepared for opportunities, they’re positioned to receive them.
• Bias-aware performance reviews: Embedding fair, transparent feedback processes helps all leaders receive the recognition and development they deserve.
• Culture shifts: Coaching can support culture change by equipping leaders to model inclusion, challenge exclusionary behaviours, and hold space for diverse voices.
When these elements are in place, coaching becomes a lever for equity, inclusion, and cultural transformation.

Coaching as a Catalyst for Confidence

SMINC’s coaching model is built on the belief that confidence is not about becoming someone else. Confidence is about becoming more fully yourself. Our process offers a confidential, non-judgmental space where emerging and underrepresented leaders can:

• Reflect on their values and leadership identity: Confidence grows when people feel they don’t have to compromise who they are to lead. We help clients uncover their core values and lead from a place of authenticity.
• Challenge limiting beliefs: Many leaders carry internal narratives that were shaped by past experiences or systemic bias. Coaching invites them to rewrite those stories by replacing self-doubt with self-trust.
• Practice courageous leadership: From having difficult conversations to advocating for change, coaching helps leaders build the emotional resilience and communication skills needed to lead with impact.

For women and emerging leaders, this process is especially powerful. It allows them to bring their full selves to the table and lead in ways that reflect their lived experience, not just traditional leadership norms.

The Challenges: More Than a Confidence Gap

Women and emerging leaders often face a complex web of internal and external challenges when stepping into leadership roles. Some of the most common include:

• Imposter Syndrome: High-achieving individuals, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, often question whether they truly belong in leadership, despite strong evidence of their competence. This self-doubt can lead to hesitation, overworking, or staying silent in critical conversations.
• Lack of Sponsorship: Mentorship is important, but sponsorship, where someone advocates for your advancement, is what truly accelerates leadership growth. Unfortunately, women and younger leaders are often over-mentored and under-sponsored.
• Internalised Bias: Societal expectations about what a “leader” looks or sounds like can lead individuals to unconsciously hold themselves back. This can manifest as downplaying achievements, avoiding visibility, or resisting power even when it’s rightfully earned.

These aren’t shortcomings, they’re symptoms of environments that haven’t always made space for difference. And that’s where coaching comes in.

Coaching for Confidence: Empowering Women and Emerging Leaders

Leadership confidence isn’t just a personal trait but rather a strategic asset. Yet for many women and emerging leaders, confidence can feel elusive. Despite having the skills, drive, and qualifications, they often face invisible barriers that hinder their progression into leadership roles. Whether it’s imposter syndrome, a lack of role models, or systemic bias, these challenges are deeply personal, but they are also deeply structural.

At Sharon Munyaka Inc. (SMINC), we believe that coaching is a powerful tool for helping underrepresented leaders not just find their voice, but use it effectively. By creating a safe, reflective space for growth, coaching builds confidence from the inside out by fostering authentic, values-driven leadership in people who may not always see themselves reflected in the boardroom.

Future-Proofing Through People

In uncertain times, it's tempting to pull back on development budgets or postpone coaching investments. But the organisations that prioritise people now will be the ones most ready for the future. Coaching is no longer a “nice-to-have” for executives in crisis but a business-critical strategy for any organisation seeking agility, growth, and long-term relevance.

At SMINC, we partner with clients who see coaching not as a perk, but as a pathway to lasting impact. Whether you’re a founder building your first team or an HR leader steering a multinational workforce, investing in coaching today lays the foundation for tomorrow’s success.

Tips for Integrating Coaching into Performance Development

To make coaching a strategic asset rather than a siloed intervention, HR leaders and business owners can take a few practical steps:

1. Embed Coaching into Development Plans: Make coaching part of the performance conversation from the outset. Link coaching goals to key competencies, behavioural expectations, or leadership KPIs.

2. Align Coaching with Business Strategy: Ensure coaching engagements reflect broader organisational priorities, whether that’s building a culture of accountability, improving innovation, or developing inclusive leadership.

3. Track Outcomes, Not Just Attendance: Coaching isn’t about ticking a box. Use feedback tools, progress reports, and performance reviews to assess how coaching is shaping behaviours and business results.

4. Champion Coaching at the Top: Executive buy-in is critical. When senior leaders visibly engage in coaching, it signals that development is a priority at all levels.

5. Support Reflection, Not Just Action: Encourage space for self-awareness, feedback, and values exploration and not just performance metrics. That’s where the deep, sustainable growth happens.

By taking a structured, intentional approach, coaching becomes integrated into the culture and an internal driver of success.
