Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital

Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital A state-of-the-art paediatric academic and tertiary referral hospital. It will be Nelson Mandela’s living legacy.
(2)

Nelson Mandela, the world’s greatest statesman, has a dream to build a 200-bed children’s hospital in Johannesburg that will serve children across Southern Africa. It will address a great need as there are only four hospitals in Africa to serve nearly 450 million children. Millions of these children suffer from life-threatening illnesses and have little or no chance of receiving the specialised care they need. The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital will ensure that no child will be turned away due to an inability to pay. This world-class facility is being built with the support of donors from across the globe, in honour of Mr. Mandela, and R1bn is needed to make it a reality. Every citizen and organisation in the world is being called upon to assist. You can make Nelson Mandela’s dream come true by SMSing the word GIFT to 40301 (T & Cs apply, SMS cost R20). For individuals outside South Africa, and organisations wanting to get involved, please visit www.nelsonmandelachildrenshospital.org for more details. Tell your friends, share this page, and help us spread the word!! The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital will be built on a site donated by the University of the Witwatersrand near the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and Wits Medical School in Parktown, Johannesburg.

Every Friday at NMCH, our corridors welcome brave young burn survivors arriving for their laser therapy sessions.

This treatment is helping children like 15-year-old Molemo Tsotetsi feel more comfortable in their skin again, move with greater ease, and rebuild their confidence.

We’re proud to be a place where healing inside and out can truly begin. 💛

Throwback to a day filled with pure magic at NMCH! 📚

We welcomed Funda Wanda for a special book-reading session, where the wonderful Sihle-isipho Nontshokweni brought Wanda to life. Our young patients were completely captivated — from stories and songs to laughter and play.

This visit formed part of a bigger journey: Funda Wande has donated dedicated Reading Corners for every ward, complete with age-appropriate books in multiple South African languages and bookshelves. These cosy spaces support learning, comfort and connection for children who spend long periods away from school during treatment.

Thank you, Funda Wande, for helping us nurture imagination, confidence and joy through the magic of reading. 💛📖

🌿 Wellness Day Recap 🌿

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a day focused on strengthening both body and mind.

Physical and mental health are deeply connected. We’re reminded that the care we give to our patients and families begins with the care we give ourselves. When we look after our own well-being, we show up with more energy, clarity, and compassion for those who depend on us. 💪

A heartfelt thank you to all our partners and collaborators for making this memorable day possible:
Discovery, Bonitas, Fedhealth, Nursing Emergencies, Risima Foundation, Office Angels, Rowena, Virgin Active, Best Vision, SANBS, Organ Donor Foundation, Old Mutual, FNB, Forever Living, Herbal Life, Sanlam, Incon, Altron, Safrican, Toga Lab, and DOH.

Here’s to choosing wellness — for ourselves and for those we serve.

💙 Celebrating Excellence in Paediatric Dentistry

Join us in congratulating Dr Londiwe Sibisi-Maboye on her historic achievement as the first African to win the Bright Smiles, Bright Futures Award, sponsored by Colgate and presented at the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD) Congress. 🏆

Dr Sibisi-Maboye, who also leads the Dental Home Foundation here at NMCH, was honoured for her groundbreaking initiative, Saving Smiles in Africa — a programme that has delivered 41 free dental surgeries, over 3 000 screenings, and 4 000 preventive oral health education sessions to underserved children across South Africa and beyond. 🌍

Her compassion and service-driven leadership continue to inspire both her colleagues and the next generation of dental professionals.
“This award is not about me. It’s about the children whose smiles remind us why we serve.” — Dr Londiwe Sibisi-Maboye

From all of us at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, we celebrate this powerful moment of excellence and the lasting impact Dr Sibisi-Maboye is making, one healthy smile at a time. 💫
