Paulani Hunt Medical Orthotist and Prosthetist

Paulani Hunt Medical Orthotist and Prosthetist We measure, design, manufacture and fit Orthotic and Prosthetic devices, with a special interest in Tech Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics in 2010.

Hunt Orthopaedics is an Orthotic and Prosthetic practice based in the Northern suburbs of Johannesburg owned and run by Paulani Hunt. Orthotist & Prosthetist, Paulani Hunt, has over 20 years of experience in the profession, having completed her National Diploma in Medical Orthotics and Prosthetics in 1999 and B. Her diverse experience ranges from working in a government institution, manufacturing the hardwearing prosthetics (arms & legs) and orthotics (leg callipers, spinal bracing, as well as foot orthotics) suitable for any developing or rural area, to her experience working at the Military Hospital fitting high activity carbon and hydraulic prosthetics and mechanically advanced Orthopaedic appliances. During this time Paulani has developed a special interest in Paediatric Orthopaedics and Prosthetics. This includes the manufacturing and fitting of customized bracing, both supportive and corrective and teaching children to walk again with their new legs. Lightweight customized knee bracing is also available for active people who need more than a little support. In addition to our customized manufacturing, we also offer the fitting of breast prostheses after the emotional experience of a mastectomy. Naturally, emotional sensitivity is high at this time in one’s life, but with Paulani’s kind, personal and emotional support, every patient’s experience has been a positive one. Our other services include the fitting and supplying of ‘off-the-shelf’ items such as compression hosiery, wrist braces and hand splints, Foam walkers (moon boots) and ankle braces and also patient aids such as crutches, walking frames and commodes. We will always do our best to turn your ‘disability’ into an ability to be and do anything you want to!

As the year winds down, let’s keep moving forward - stronger, steadier, and pain-free.

November is your reminder to care for your joints, posture, and movement so you can step into the new year with confidence. 👣

🧍‍♀️ Posture & Weight Distribution

In neuro-orthopaedic conditions, uneven posture isn’t just a matter of appearance — it’s often the result of muscle imbalances or altered nerve signals that affect how the body holds itself.

Over time, this can create pressure points, fatigue, and discomfort. That’s why supportive braces or seating are so important — especially for children who are still developing.

They help maintain proper alignment, reduce strain, and make movement safer and more comfortable. 💙

🧠 Muscle Tone & Control
Neurological conditions often cause abnormal muscle tone.
- Either too stiff (spasticity) or too loose (flaccidity).

This imbalance affects how joints move and how weight is distributed when standing or walking.

That’s why proper assessment, support, and therapy are so important, to restore balance, protect joints, and improve movement for daily life. 💙

👣 How Often Should You Have a Gait Analysis?

Just like your body changes over time, so does the way you move.

We recommend having a gait analysis every 12–18 months, or sooner if you notice:
⚠️ New pain or discomfort in your feet, knees, hips, or back
⚠️ Changes in balance, posture, or walking pattern
⚠️ Growth or development changes (especially for children!)

Regular gait assessments help catch small issues before they become big problems, keeping every step supported, balanced, and pain-free. 💙

When the brain and muscles don’t communicate as smoothly as they should — as in conditions like cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or muscular dystrophy — it can cause muscle imbalances and joint misalignment over time.

✨ Why this matters:
- Misaligned joints can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility
- Overcompensation in movement affects balance and posture
- Early correction and support can prevent long-term deformities and make walking or daily activities easier

That’s why proper orthotic support, guided movement therapy, and alignment-focused care are so important — they help the body move in harmony again.

Because when your joints are aligned, every step becomes stronger, steadier, and more confident. 💙

🦴 When is Orthopaedic Intervention Recommended?

Sometimes braces or surgery are needed to improve mobility, correct alignment, or prevent long-term complications.
This can be the case when:
👣 Braces help support posture, walking, or joint function.
🛠️ Surgery may be considered to release tight tendons, stabilise joints, or correct deformities.

💡 But here’s the most important part:
You are never alone in this process. We walk with you every step of the way — explaining your options, ensuring you understand each stage, and tailoring care to your needs.

Because treatment isn’t just about the procedure; it’s about the journey to better movement, comfort, and confidence. 💙

🧬 What Is Muscular Dystrophy?

Muscular dystrophy (MD) is a group of genetic disorders that cause muscles to become weaker and lose strength over time.

💡 How it affects the body:

- Gradual muscle weakness makes everyday activities, like walking, climbing stairs, or even breathing—more challenging.
- It can begin in childhood or adulthood, depending on the type.
- While there’s no cure yet, treatments such as physical therapy, bracing, and advanced medical care can slow progression and improve quality of life.

✨ Early diagnosis and a supportive care team make a big difference for those living with MD.

🧠 Why Neuro-Orthopaedics Is Different 🦴

Neurological conditions often cause changes like abnormal muscle tone, contractures, or imbalances that affect posture, walking (gait), and joint alignment.

That’s why treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all, it takes a team approach.
Orthopaedic surgeons, neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and orthotists all work together to create the best outcomes for each patient. 💙

Because better movement takes teamwork. 👣

🧒 Why Good Posture Matters for Kids

Children are still growing, which means posture habits have a BIG impact on how bones and joints develop. 📈

Overloaded backpacks or poor sitting posture can:
👣 Change the way a child walks (their gait)
😣 Cause tired, sore feet after school
🦴 Contribute to long-term spinal alignment issues

Good habits built early = healthier spines and stronger steps for life. 💙
