Why does everything seem to fall apart after school?

Many autistic children spend the entire school day managing noise, expectations, transitions and social demands. Even when they appear calm, their nervous system is working overtime.

By the time they get home, the effort of holding it together all day can lead to emotional exhaustion. Home is the place where they finally feel safe enough to release that pressure.

Understanding what is happening beneath the behaviour helps parents respond with support instead of frustration.

At C.A.R.E, we focus on helping children regulate, recover, and feel safe in their environment so they can learn and grow with confidence.

There are moments in many homes with neurodivergent children that can leave even the most patient parent feeling confused or overwhelmed.

In those moments, behaviour can sometimes look like defiance, a child refusing, resisting, or pushing back. But often what we see on the surface tells only part of the story.

In many cases, what appears to be defiance may actually be a child’s nervous system signalling distress. Rather than rebellion, it may be a response to overwhelm, fatigue, or sensory overload.

When we pause to look beneath the behaviour, we often discover a child asking for support rather

Dopamine plays an important role in motivation, attention, and focus.

For many neurodivergent children, supporting healthy dopamine activity through movement, creativity, sensory input, and structured activities can make learning and regulation easier.

Simple strategies such as movement breaks, activity menus, and predictable transitions can help the brain stay engaged and balanced.

For many parents of neurodivergent children, the hardest moments are not always the outbursts.

Sometimes it is the silence.

Parents often describe feeling helpless, frustrated or shut out.
Unlike a meltdown, there is no obvious path in.

The relationship can feel one-sided.
The parent keeps reaching, while the child keeps retreating.

These feelings are real and deeply human. Connection with our children is one of our strongest emotional needs.

For many neurodivergent children, withdrawal is not rejection.

It may be a response to overwhelm, difficulty expressing emotions, or needing space to regulate.

When parents stay calm, patient and present, they help create the safety children need to reconnect.

Small moments matter.
A walk together.
A quiet car ride.
Sitting side by side.

Sometimes connection grows slowly, but it does grow.

If your child is struggling in a traditional learning environment, supportive educational settings can make a meaningful difference.

Teaching autistic children about body safety and personal boundaries is essential.
Many autistic children are trusting and may struggle to recognise unsafe situations.
Clear, direct conversations about bodies, consent and safe behaviour help protect them.
Every child should know:
β€’ My body belongs to me
β€’ I can say NO
β€’ No one should ask me to keep secrets about touching
β€’ I can always tell a safe adult
These skills build confidence, safety and healthy relationships.

If your child is struggling in a traditional school environment, support is available.

Some communication challenges are easy to miss.

A child may speak clearly but still struggle with the social side of language.

Understanding tone, taking turns in conversation, or reading facial expressions can be difficult.

These challenges are not about intelligence or effort.
They reflect how communication is processed.

Recognising the signs early allows children to receive the support they need to build confidence and connection.

Communication challenges can have different roots.

Some children struggle with the social rules of language, known as Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder.

Others may have Autism Spectrum Disorder, which includes social communication differences along with repetitive behaviours or sensory sensitivities.

Understanding the difference helps families access the right support and strategies.

Every child deserves to be understood in the way they communicate best.

When some children lose words under stress, it is not a setback.
Stress, overload, and nervous system shutdown can make speech inaccessible.
This does not mean understanding is lost.
Safety, calm, and reduced pressure help language return when the body is ready.

Games Day 🎲 Connection. Confidence. Fun. 🎲

Games Day at CARE Seniors was filled with energy, laughter and connection.

These moments are more than just fun. They help build confidence, encourage social interaction and create opportunities for learners to engage with one another in a safe and supportive space.

Through games, our learners practise communication, teamwork, turn-taking and problem-solving… all while having a great time.

Because sometimes the biggest growth happens when it doesn’t feel like work at all.

Pushing, crashing, and squeezing are not random behaviours.
They are ways the body seeks deep pressure to feel calm and organised.
Proprioception helps children understand where their body is in space.
When this need is met, regulation and focus often improve. πŸ’™

Hiking Fridays
Where Learning Meets Nature

There is something powerful about learning outside the classroom.

Our learners absolutely love Hiking Fridays… time spent in open spaces, breathing in fresh air, moving their bodies and exploring the world around them.

From discovering different plants and textures to simply enjoying the calm that nature brings, these moments do more than just excite them… they regulate, engage and inspire.

For many of our learners, nature provides a sense of freedom and connection that traditional environments cannot.

And honestly… the joy on their faces says it all.
