Children's Memorial Institute

Children's Memorial Institute The Children's Memorial Institute is an entity comprising of about 30 separate Organizations, mostly

The Children's Memorial Institute is currently functioning as a multitude of separate but complementary services that are provided mostly but not exclusively through NGOs. There are at present several NGO organizations including governmental institutions. The commonality of these NGOs is that their services are primarily if not wholly aimed at children and in most cases children who have special needs. These specialized services are characterized in the main by their conspicuous absence in the public sector hospitals. Even the academic hospitals with paediatric departments present often lack these services. The services offered by CMI are thus filling a gap and meeting the needs of these children and their families. The vast majority of the recipients of the services are from disadvantaged backgrounds and similar services in the private sector are either non-existent or are unaffordable. There is a long history of service provision to the children of Johannesburg by this institution going back several decades. The services provided by the organizations present are not only supported by donor funding but indeed by the Departments of Social Development, Basic Education and Department of Health (mostly through some maintenance via the Department of Infrastructural Development). The organizations providing the services are mostly dealing with issues relating to the psychosocial well being of children and others directly dealing with heath and few with educational issues. Hi all from 9am tomorrow until 4pm on Friday, the Wits 3rd Year Medical Humanities Exhibition “Healing Journeys” is on display at the CMI Hub (Venue A). We did the marking and adjudication today and these exhibitions are truly exceptional. They explore the human side of medicine and healing in South Africa and Africa, interrogating important themes that include: the intimate and domestic violence experienced during Apartheid and excluded from the TRC hearings; the intersections of health, science, religion and healing; inequalities in health care from rural to urban environments; new and creative ways of ‘seeing’ the LGBTQI+ community; and the journeys of inspirational individuals such as Judge Edward Cameron, Simon Nkoli and Dr Mary Malahlela, the first black female doctor to graduate from Wits in 1947. The exhibitions are interactive and informative and bound to move you (please be warned, they do display sensitive information and visuals).
Please enter from the Sensory-Space as the Hub garden is being used as a display site.
Please consider visiting the exhibition before or after tomorrow’s CMI AGM.

On Saturday, we celebrated National Children’s Day, a reminder of the importance of protecting and nurturing the next generation. 🌱

At JPCCC, we see the strength and potential in every child who walks through our doors. Our work is grounded in creating safe, supportive spaces where children can express themselves freely, process their emotions, and receive the care they deserve.
Through counselling, community programmes, and advocacy, we continue to stand beside families, helping them build foundations for healthier, more hopeful futures. 💛

Congratulations The Teddy Bear Foundation South Africa and Dr Omar 💙

🌟 Huge congrats to Dr. Shaheda Omar on receiving the Women's Excellence Award from Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi on Oct 25! 🎉 Honoring her powerhouse work for child safety, because every kid deserves a protector like her. We also want to thank the Minister and the Department of Education for this accolade!

Through the Teddy Bear Foundation, Dr. Omar leads the charge:
• Trauma healing with play therapy & counseling for abuse survivors
• Prevention via offender rehab programs to break violence cycles
• Policy wins in courts for stronger child protections
• Community training to spot & stop harm early

She's not just saving lives; she's building a safer SA, one teddy bear hug at a time. 💪❤️
