World Antimicrobial Awareness Week

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18–24 November 2025) focuses on the theme “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is putting modern medicine at risk, mainly driven by the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in human, animal, and agricultural settings.

With limited new treatments being developed, we are prioritising Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) to safeguard the effectiveness of existing medicines. As part of this effort, AHF is partnering with the Gauteng Department of Health to host an AMS Workshop for Pharmacists to strengthen their capacity to lead stewardship programmes in their facilities.

Reshma, the National Pharmacy Manager at AHF, presented on practical AMS implementation at the district and primary healthcare level, focusing on tailored approaches for resource-limited settings. Building pharmacist skills and promoting strong multidisciplinary teamwork are key to protecting lifesaving antimicrobials for future generations.

Put up a FIGHT this World Antimicrobial Awareness Week

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) happens when bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites no longer respond to medicines that once killed them. This makes infections harder and sometimes, impossible to treat. For people living with HIV, AMR can reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals used to manage infections and opportunistic diseases.

Here’s how to fight AMR:

• Take HIV and other prescribed medicines exactly as directed.
• Avoid using antibiotics without a doctor’s advice.
• Practice safe hygiene and infection prevention.
• Get tested regularly and follow through with your treatment plan.

World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day is observed on November 14th.

Did you know?

Diabetes is a non-communicable disease. People living with HIV are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes due to long-term HIV infection and certain antiretroviral medications. For people living with HIV, managing diabetes isn’t just about medication; it’s about lifestyle, nutrition, and regular check-ups.

Managing both conditions means:
• Regular blood sugar checks.
• Staying active.
• Eating balanced, healthy meals.
• Adhering to your treatment plan.

HIV – What It Is and What It Isn’t

What It Is:
• A virus that attacks the immune system, specifically CD4 cells that fight infection.
• Manageable with antiretroviral therapy (ART), helping people live long, healthy lives.
• With consistent treatment, HIV can become undetectable, meaning it can’t be passed on (U=U).

What It Isn’t:
• Not the same as AIDS — AIDS is the advanced stage of HIV, and not everyone develops it.
• Not a death sentence — treatment allows people to live long and full lives.
• Not spread through casual contact like hugging, sharing food, or touching.
• Not something to be ashamed of, stigma only hinders prevention and treatment.

Contraceptive Methods

Family planning is about taking control of your body, health, and future. There are different options, and the best method is the one that works for your lifestyle and needs:

Pill: Taken daily to prevent ovulation.
Injectable: A shot every 2–3 months.
Implant: A small rod lasting 3–5 years.
IUD: A device in the uterus lasting 3–12 years.
Condoms: Protect against pregnancy and STIs/HIV.
Emergency contraception: Pills taken within 72–120 hours after unprotected s*x.
Sterilisation: A permanent method for those certain about not having children.

Through our Girls Act programme, we empower girls with accurate information, peer support, and access to youth-friendly services to prevent HIV, avoid unplanned pregnancies, and protect their futures.

During International Day of the Girl (IDG) this October, we hosted community events across four provinces (Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal), creating safe spaces where girls could discuss health, confidence, and self-care. Because every girl deserves the power to make informed choices.

Social determinants of health are a clear reminder that reality does shape health-seeking access. One such determinant is the impact of poverty on health outcomes across the African Continent. When people have to negotiate between food and transport or other basic needs and using resources to access health, when people have to deliberate between food and treatment, …. can’t afford transport to clinics, struggle to put food on the table, or face unemployment, their health choices are already compromised.

Real Talk on… HIV stigma

Too many people avoid testing or delay treatment because of fear, shame, or discrimination around HIV. Stigma shows up in conversations, harsh labels, or silence that makes people feel isolated. The truth is that stigma doesn’t stop HIV; it only stops people from getting the help that they need.

What we can do:
• Break the silence — speak openly and honestly about HIV.
• Replace judgment with compassion and understanding.
• Stand with those living with HIV and remind everyone: HIV treatment works. Treatment = Life.
