Happy Speech Therapist day to myself☺️ and all other awesome speechies making a difference everyday!

💬🗨️Today we honour the dedicated professionals who help unlock communication; one word, one gesture, one communication system and one breakthrough at a time.

In South Africa, speech therapy is more than a service, it's a lifeline. But too many communities still face barriers to accessing services.

💡 We can do better. By investing in early intervention, supporting team approaches, and expanding services, we can ensure that every voice is heard, regardless of language, location, or ability.

🌟 Speech therapists can lead the way by sharing tools and strategies across disciplines, advocating for inclusive systems in health and education, building partnerships with families and caregivers and building bridges between clinical expertise and everyday life.

🇿🇦 To every South African speech therapist: Thank you for your resilience, creativity and care.

🎓 If you are speech therapist interested in learning new and effective ways to deliver services, have a look at our study programmes: https://www.up.ac.za/caac-study-programmes or email saak@up.ac.za for more information.

'n Goeie vriendin van my is 'n remediërende onderwyseres.

Geld, onbetrokke ouers, of moeilike huislike omstandighede.
Want 'n jaar of twee in 'n kind se lewe is 'n LAAAANG tyd.
Ja, nie alle kinders ontwikkel teen dieselfde tempo nie. Daarmee stem almal saam.

So as jou kind se onderwyseres bekommerd is, luister asseblief.
As jy rooi ligte sien fl***er, moet dit nie ignoreer nie.

📣October is AAC Awareness Month

What is AAC and why is it important?

AAC is a range of strategies, devices and systems which add to or replace spoken speech. It is important because it enables a person to:

🗣Convey their needs and wants, tell stories
🗣Show what they know
🗣Supports their learning
🗣Reduces frustration & isolation
🗣Gives them a voice so that they are not at a higher risk for abuse & neglect
🗣Explain their pain so that it is managed
🗣Be independent and enjoy relationships

There are a variety of tools to help aid communication. AAC systems and strategies include 'no technology solutions', 'low technology' and 'high technology' solutions.

This October we celebrate people who use AAC and their right to have a voice!

Image is of a young boy who is seated in a wheelchair. He is using his fist to select symbols in a paper based communication book. An adult hand is in the frame holding a toy up to him. He is telling his partner to add a block onto the tower they are building together.

The best way to build a child’s language is to have back and forth conversations about what interests them. Children who have more conversations about their ideas and interests develop stronger language skills and do better at school. Try these fun ideas to get started.

This is a hard one… something I can’t seem to fully comprehend. I had to say goodbye to one of my young patients this week. At the memorial so beautifully prepared by the Baby Therapy Centre, the Pastor compared his life to bubbles. So fitting as he always loved bubbles in our sessions together. Everyone loves bubbles, they are so beautiful and reflect the light for everyone to see. They make us happy and you can’t help feeling joy in their presence. But unfortunately they only last but a short while…

Life is short. Heaven is so rich with you sweet angel.
