🌿 A Very Special First Massage 🌿

Yesterday I had the privilege of giving a young client his very first massage — what an honour.

A first experience should feel safe, comfortable and positive. When introducing a child to bodywork, I take extra care to ensure the environment feels calm, respectful and reassuring, so that it builds trust and healthy awareness of their body.

For all clients under 16, a parent or guardian is required to be present for the full session. Creating a safe and professional space is always my priority.

It’s such a joy to see someone leave feeling relaxed and confident after their very first treatment. 🌿

A few clients ask for “the deepest pressure possible” — I understand why: strong pressure feels like it’s doing something. But here’s the important part: pain and relief aren’t just about how hard I press.

Think of your nervous system like an alarm system. A gentle, accurate nudge can tell the alarm it’s safe. A very hard push can set the alarm off even more loudly. That louder alarm = increased sensitivity, guarding, and sometimes longer-lasting pain.

Here’s what I aim for instead:
• Targeted work that addresses the real contributing areas (not just where it hurts).
• Slow, progressive techniques that reduce nervous-system sensitivity.
• Communication — we check pressure, response and comfort as we go.
• Practical take-home advice so you keep improving between sessions.

You’ll often get better, more lasting results from a calibrated approach than from someone “slamming” the muscle hoping it will fix the problem.
