Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to sun protection, not all SPFs work the same way — but both play a vital role in keeping your skin safe.

🔹 Chemical SPF
• Absorbs UV rays and converts them into a small amount of heat, preventing damage to deeper skin layers.
• Most chemical filters don’t leave a white cast, making them ideal for daily wear.
🔹 Mineral SPF
• Uses zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to reflect and scatter UV rays before they reach the skin.
• Can leave a slight cast, but is often preferred for sensitive, post-procedure, or infant skin due to minimal absorption.

How to Choose
Both chemical and mineral UV filters undergo extensive safety and efficacy testing before approval for cosmetic use.
Many modern sunscreens now use hybrid formulations, combining both types to deliver:

1) Pre cleanse by removing all makeup, dirt, SPF & oils
2) Secondary cleanse to ensure the skin is clean and to pH balance 🧼
3) Exfoliate 2/3 x a week to avoid breakouts, dead skin build up and to allow your other products to pe*****te evenly and efficiently
4) Moisturise 2 x a day to ensure your skin locks in it’s moisture and stays soft, supple & radiant 💦
