Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality successfully hosted the SMME Tools and Equipment Handover Ceremony at the Koster Town Hall, reaffirming its commitment to advancing local economic development.

The programme was officially opened by the MMC for Planning and Local Economic Development, Cllr Virginia Molatole, who highlighted the municipality’s ongoing efforts to empower local businesses. This initiative, aligned with the municipality’s SDBIP, aims to strengthen SMMEs, enhance productivity, and stimulate economic growth across Koster, Reagile, and Borolelo.

In his address, the Hon. Mayor, Cllr Thabo Jacobs, called on the Planning and LED Directorate to broaden its support to reach more SMMEs. He emphasised that small businesses remain the backbone of the local economy and are key to addressing poverty and unemployment.

The Mayor further raised concern about the state of the local township economy, particularly the prevalence of local shops and tuck shops being operated outside the ownership of South Africans. He urged the LED Directorate to prioritise interventions that empower and support South African entrepreneurs to actively participate in and reclaim space within the township economy. He stressed that building a strong, inclusive local economy requires deliberate efforts to ensure that local communities benefit meaningfully from economic opportunities.

The Mayor also confirmed that this programme will be rolled out to other areas, with Mazista, Moedwil, and Redirile identified as the next communities to benefit.
He further encouraged beneficiaries to take proper care of the equipment provided to ensure sustainability and long-term business growth.

Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the municipality, noting that the support will improve their operations, increase productivity, and contribute meaningfully to the growth of their businesses.
The municipality remains committed to building an inclusive and resilient local economy through continued support for entrepreneurs and small enterprises.

OFFICE OF THE MAYOR HOSTS ANNUAL EASTER SERVICE

The Office of the Mayor today successfully hosted its Annual Easter Service (Mantswe a Supileng), bringing together pastors from various church denominations, alongside members of the community, in a spirit of unity, reflection, and prayer.

This marks the second Easter Service hosted by the Office, reaffirming its commitment to working with faith-based organisations in strengthening social cohesion and moral regeneration within the municipality.

The service created a platform for collective prayer for the municipality, its leadership, and the broader community. Special prayers were offered to confront and end the scourge of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), to advance job creation, and to seek guidance, wisdom, and strength for the leadership of the local municipality.

The gathering stands as a powerful demonstration of unity and shared purpose, reflecting one of the most meaningful spiritual pilgrimages observed by communities during this sacred period.
In addition, prayers were extended to all those travelling to different provinces to observe Easter in their respective churches, wishing them safe journeys and safe returns.

The Office of the Mayor extends its sincere appreciation to all religious leaders, congregants, and community members who participated and contributed to the success of this important event.

Office of the Mayor Brings Services and Support to Borolelo Community

The Office of the Mayor, in partnership with Social Services, Health Department, Aurum istitute and SASSA, today delivered essential services and support to the Borolelo community through targeted outreach programmes at Borolelo Primary School and Borolelo Community Hall.

At Borolelo Primary School, the Office of the Mayor led a school uniform donation initiative aimed at restoring dignity and supporting learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. 49 learners received a comprehensive uniform pack, which included a winter set, a two-piece tracksuit, three vests, two white school shirts, three pairs of school socks, three pairs of underwear for both boys and girls, two long school pants, two short school pants, and two pairs of school dungarees.

The Honorable Mayor emphasised the importance of education, encouraging learners to remain focused and motivated in pursuit of their dreams. The Mayor highlighted that learners from Borolelo have the potential to excel and access opportunities across the country, including studying in places such as Stellenbosch and beyond. The Office also reaffirmed its continued support to learners who have progressed academically, demonstrating that success is possible with determination and the right support.

Parents were urged to play an active role in their children’s development by ensuring consistent school attendance, proper hygiene, and clean school uniforms. The school management was also commended for safeguarding the new Borolelo Primary School premises and maintaining the infrastructure in good condition.

In a parallel programme at Borolelo Community Hall, the Social Development MEC Hon. Susana Dantjie, in partnership with the Office of the Mayor, led the Re Thuse Re Go Thuse outreach initiative. The programme is aimed at taking government services directly to the people, particularly to communities that experience barriers in accessing service centres.

Through this initiative, SASSA and Social Services provided on-site assistance to community members with grant applications and access to a range of essential services.

This approach ensures that residents receive timely support within their own community.

These initiatives form part of a broader commitment by the municipality to improve service delivery, support vulnerable groups, and create an environment where both learners and community members are empowered to thrive.

End.
