EXECUTIVE DYSFUNCTION

Probably one of the most challenging concepts to deal with in human behaviour and interaction, Executive Dysfunction is more common than we can conceive. This hidden challenge is often associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but is a common result of Traumatic Brain Injuries.

Every struggle looks different depending on where you stand.
For the ant, a single drop is a flood — a reminder that scale shapes experience.

What feels small to you might be everything to someone else.
And empathy begins the moment we understand that difference.

🎓 The Final Stretch — and What Comes After

As learners approach the end of exams, many begin to feel mentally and emotionally overwhelmed. For some, this stress continues even after the last paper — when exhaustion, relief, and uncertainty all collide.

At InPsyght Centre, Sonelle Gerneke, Educational Psychologist, offers an integrative, brain-based therapy approach that combines mindfulness and guided meditation to help learners move from overwhelm to regulation. These sessions promote calm, focus, and clarity — supporting both the final stretch of exams and the debriefing period that follows.

🌿 Taking time to pause, breathe, and reset the nervous system helps learners finish strong and enter the holidays with renewed energy, focus, and optimism.

If your child ever feels overwhelmed or in crisis, please reach out for help:

🌿 When Puberty Meets ADHD 🌿
The teenage years bring a wave of hormonal change — and for teens with ADHD, this can feel like a storm. ⚡️ Fluctuating hormones can affect attention, mood, and emotional regulation… and even change how medication works.

💊 If your teen’s ADHD medication no longer seems as effective as before, it may be time for a re-evaluation with a psychiatrist — hormonal shifts can alter how the body processes medication.

At InPsyght Centre, we support families through these developmental transitions with a holistic, brain-based approach that includes emotional regulation, executive-function coaching, and collaborative care. 💬✨

🌱 Beyond School Readiness — Discovering Your Child’s Cognitive Potential

👨‍👩‍👧 As children prepare to enter formal schooling, many parents wonder whether their child is “ready” for Grade 1.

🧩 But true school readiness is more than being able to count, recognise letters, or write a name — it’s about how a child learns, thinks, and adapts to new challenges.

🧠 Cognitive potential refers to the underlying mental processes that support problem-solving, reasoning, attention, and memory — the building blocks of successful learning.

📊 Using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV), an internationally recognised cognitive assessment designed for young children, an educational psychologist can help parents understand each child’s unique profile. This insight forms a roadmap for nurturing both strengths and areas that may need additional support before formal schooling begins.

🧑‍🏫 Readiness, however, extends beyond cognitive ability alone. Behaviour, attention, and emotional regulation also influence how a child engages with learning. 📝 Parent questionnaires and developmental screeners are often used to complement the cognitive assessment, offering a holistic picture of a child’s readiness and overall well-being.

🔎 Early insight allows parents to be proactive rather than reactive.

📖 Some children may initially mask subtle learning challenges — for example, they may read or spell accurately in the early grades, yet when academic demands increase around Grade 4, they can no longer rely solely on strengths such as visual memory or verbal reasoning.

🧭 A cognitive potential assessment can identify underlying cognitive patterns that may signal areas needing support — including early indicators of possible specific learning disorders and attentional or executive functioning processes that influence focus, concentration, and learning efficiency.

🌟 By recognising these early, parents can address potential barriers before they impact confidence, motivation, or performance.

✨ The goal is not to label or diagnose — it’s to understand how your child learns best, so you can support them to flourish from the start.

🗣️ Assessments are available in English or Afrikaans, depending on your child’s language of learning.

📬 Please reach out to Sonelle, one of our Educational Psychologists at Insight Therapy Centre, for more information or to discuss how a cognitive potential assessment can support your child’s educational journey.
