Ben West did not set out to build something viral. He set out to honour his brother and help someone feel less alone.
After losing his brother Sam to su***de eight years ago, Ben quietly spent two years building a platform rooted in one simple but powerful idea. Strangers writing letters to strangers who are struggling. The result is Reasons to Stay, a su***de prevention project offering comfort through genuine human connection.
When you visit the site, you receive a randomly selected letter written by someone somewhere in the world who chose to show up with empathy and care. In just one week, more than 10,000 letters from over 100 countries have been written and read by over 160,000 people.
What stands out most is what people choose to say. Not achievements or possessions, but reminders of worth, love and belonging. Reasons to Stay does not offer fixes or advice. It offers presence. And sometimes that quiet reminder that someone cares is enough to help someone breathe through the moment.
