With the festive season in full swing, it can be overwhelming and common to feel immense sadness.

It might be your first or 15th Christmas without your loved one or family member and it might be difficult to manage emotions during the "festive season".

Here are a few ways to try cope with your grief during the festive season:

Talk to family or friends about what you are experiencing and about the people you are missing.

Set realistic expectations for yourself about what you can manage and how you might feel.

Try to avoid 'canceling' family celebrations. It is important to celebrate and make new memories, even if it makes you a little sad.

Allow yourself to feel all the emotions. Joy, excitement, anger, sadness and grief all have their own place.

Find comfort in doing things for others and finding special ways to remember the people you miss.

Your feelings matter!

It's easy to be tough on yourself when you feel like you aren't achieving, but we often forget that praise is needed too.

During the year it gets busy and we find ourselves in survival mode most of the time. When you are going about your day to day, it is hard to see the bigger picture.

That is why I challenge you to look back at your highlights of the year and feel proud about all you have achieved and done. Some might be big goals that you get to tick off the list, others are smaller, but that doesn't mean it isn't significant. Whatever you managed to do intentionally and unintentionally deserves praise, because even if you felt like you couldn't do anything, you did it!

It might not have felt so then, but when you look back it is amazing to see how far you have come and how much growth took place in one year.

Take a moment to celebrate the year that was and use it to inspire yourself when you feel low next year.

It was a privilege to speak at an event on Word Disability Day over the past weekend.

The talk was specifically aimed at carers of persons with disabilities.

We shared a little motivation and tips on the importance of self-care as a carer.

Even when you are passionate about your work and it requires of you to give to others, it's important to remember to take care of yourself too.

If you want to give your best to others, you have to be mentally and physically strong yourself.

Today marks World AIDS Day, which is commemorated annually on 1 December.

Let's use today to practice kindness and educate ourselves and those around us to break stigmas surrounding HIV/AIDS.

On this day we think of all the lives of individuals and families that have been affected by AIDS. We light a candle for those living with HIV and we remember those who have passed away.

We also reflect on our country and the world's progress, success , gaps and challenges in response to HIV/AIDS.

This year's theme 'Equalise and Integrate to End AIDS', speaks to one of the most valuable lessons learnt during the pandemic, which is the need to integrate health services and address inequalities.

Today spare a minute to think of all those affected and let's all work together to end the stigma and exclusions, that cause great mental distress.

Kindness goes a long way and can make the biggest difference to someone's day.

Let's end this year strong.

As the year starts winding down, it can often feel like there just isn't enough time for deadlines, exams, things you'd still like to achieve and even everyday tasks like cooking, paying bills and remembering to buy your best friends birthday gift.

This can get overwhelming and add to that end of year fatigue feeling.

There is no way to escape it, but we can do things to manage the effect it has physically and mentally on our bodies.

This week, take a minute to sit down and make a list of three things you want to prioritise this week and month.

Crossing items off a list can be very satisfying and makes you feel like you've accomplished something. In doing so, it also gives your brain a moment to to repax and not focus so hard on remembering the long list in your head. It can also help with reducing feelings of stress and anxiety.

Writing down three to five items at a time seems more achievable and less daunting.

Every time you cross the items off your list, start a new one and repeat.

Giving yourself these little moments of grace and achievement go a long way in helping you beat end of year stress and fatigue.

What do you do to beat end of year fatigue, whether it's at home or at work?
