MOTOR MILESTONES
A developing brain and nervous system is evident when a baby reaches each motor milestone in sequence.

At the BabyGym Institute motor milestones are viewed as beacons that indicate progress, as it is the movement of the foetus, and later the movement of the baby that structures and prunes the wiring needed for a clever brain, a willing heart and an able body to do its work properly. We recognise that every baby is unique and develops at his or her own pace and hence milestones are not cast in stone, but viewed as general trends and guidelines that indicate the progressive development of the baby’s brain and sensory-motor apparatus.
The quality of the milestone is more important than the time in which the milestone is reached.

Motor milestones include: suckling for nourishment, rolling over to both sides, sitting without support, crawling on all-fours and walking without support.

GRASPING HANDS

Our hands and fingers are involved in almost every daily activity. We use our hands and sense of touch to determine temperature, judge weight and sense texture. Our hands are also important for communication - we use our hands to establish contact, communicate and to engage others. Our hands are therefore crucial for building relationships, fostering independence and developing the cognitive functions of the brain.

When baby was born, the hands were closed. This was appropriate, because a closed hand is a resting hand. It is however, difficult to explore and learn with clenched hands. It is also difficult to become independent with closed hands – eating without assistance, using utensils, dressing and un******ng, drawing, writing, cooking, etc. all require open hands and agile fingers that can grasp and work independently.

In fact, grasping is one of the most important factors that influence total development.

FUNDA THE STRONG-NECKED OSTRICH

Meet Funda, the beloved mascot of the BabyGym family.

Funda means “learn” in Zulu — a perfect fit for our BabyGym philosophy. We’re passionate about learning, and by “learning,” we mean the kind that John Holt so beautifully described:

“Children are born, passionately eager to make as much sense as they can of things around them.”

But why an ostrich?

The story comes from Dr Melodie de Jager, shared in the foreword of the BabyGym book:

“As a student, I visited an ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn. There, I met a novice ostrich farmer eagerly awaiting his first hatch. He heard the hatchlings pecking inside their eggs for days and, feeling sorry for them, decided to help. With a teaspoon, he gently tapped in sync with their pecking to soften the shells.

When the chicks hatched, he was surprised to see they all had floppy necks. Days passed, but their neck muscles remained weak. An experienced breeder later explained that by helping them hatch, he had removed the essential struggle they needed to develop strong necks.

They needed that challenge to grow into independent, proud, strong-necked ostriches — because in the struggle lies the freedom.”

Just like those ostriches, babies need time, space, and opportunity to discover and learn with all their senses and muscles.

So before reaching for screens or high-tech baby gear, remember Dr Melodie de Jager’s wise words:

“The more physical the game, the greater the developmental gain.”

SITTING

To be able to sit up, the baby needs to have sufficient muscle strength to resist the pull of gravity, a well-developed sense of balance and protective responses in the forward, backward and side-to-side directions. Protective responses keep baby safe and protect them from getting hurt when they put their hands out to prevent themselves from toppling over.

Initially, babies sit with the legs wide open and by supporting themselves with both hands in front of them. As their balance and upright posture improve, they rely on their sense of balance to instruct the hands to move to their sides to prevent them from falling over.

After lots of falling over and getting back up again, baby can hold themselves upright without using the hands for support.

Now the inside senses and eyes are communicating to keep baby upright.
