🦟 It's Time for a Malaria-Free Future! 🦟

Today, we stand united with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in observing SADC Malaria Day. This year's powerful theme, "Time to deliver ZERO Malaria to Southern Africa," is a call to action for all of us.

Zero malaria starts with:
✅ Using insecticide-treated nets every night.
✅ Supporting indoor residual spraying programmes.
✅ Seeking immediate diagnosis and treatment if symptoms like fever, chills, and headaches appear.
✅ Spreading awareness within our communities.

Let’s come together to safeguard the well-being of every child, uplift our dedicated healthcare workers, and advocate for policies that lead us toward a brighter, healthier future. The future of Southern Africa depends on our collective care and commitment. Together, we can make a difference. 🤝

Good luck to all my amazing young patients tackling exams right now! 🌟

A few health tips to help you perform at your best:
😴Sleep is your superpower: Aim for 8-10 hours each night. Your brain consolidates memories while you sleep, so pulling all-nighters actually hurts your performance. Set a consistent bedtime, even during exam season.
🥩Fuel your brain properly – Start each day with a balanced breakfast including protein, whole grains, and fruit. Keep healthy snacks like nuts, fruit, yogurt, or cheese nearby when studying. Stay hydrated with water throughout the day – dehydration affects concentration.
💪Move your body: Take regular breaks to stretch, walk, or do some quick exercises. Even 10-15 minutes of movement between study sessions boosts focus and reduces stress. Physical activity is one of the best stress-relievers available.
👨‍👩‍👧Talk about stress: It's normal to feel anxious about exams. Talk to your parents, teachers, or a trusted adult if you're feeling overwhelmed. There's no shame in asking for help.

You've got this! Believe in yourself as much as I believe in you. 💙

World Stroke Day 2025 🧠

Most parents don't realise that strokes can happen in children too. While rare (affecting 1-2 per 100 000 children yearly), paediatric strokes remain among the top 10 causes of death in this age group.

🚨Warning signs in children:
Sudden weakness or numbness on one side
Difficulty speaking or understanding
Severe headache with no known cause
Vision problems
Loss of balance or coordination
Seizures

Unlike adults, children's stroke risks often stem from heart conditions, sickle cell disease, blood vessel abnormalities, or infections.

⏰ Time = Brain. If you notice these symptoms, seek emergency care immediately. Early treatment dramatically improves outcomes.

According to the Cleveland Clinic and the American Stroke Association, prompt recognition and treatment are crucial for recovery in pediatric strokes.

💙 Know the signs. Share this post. You could save a child's life.

🍔World Food Day 2025 🌍

As a paediatrician, I see firsthand how nutrition shapes futures. Every child deserves access to nourishing food, yet 735 million people globally still face hunger. This World Food Day, let’s remember that food security is about ensuring every child can grow, learn, and thrive.

Food is medicine. Food is development. Food is a basic human right. 💚 Let's reflect on our food choices and their impact on our children's health and our planet's future.
Every bite truly counts. What will you do today to contribute to a better food future for our children?

Share this message and tag someone working towards food security in South Africa. Together, we can nourish the next generation. 🙌🏾

❤️Celebrating World Heart Day ❤️
Did you know that heart-healthy habits start in childhood? The foundation we lay now shapes our children's cardiovascular health for life. Because of this, I encourage parents to focus on these key areas:

💪🏾Physical Activity: Children need at least 60 minutes of active play daily. It doesn't have to be structured exercise – dancing, jumping, playing tag, or riding bikes all count!
🍎Nutrition Matters: Introduce colourful fruits and vegetables early. Limit processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive salt. Remember, children learn by watching us – family meals with wholesome foods set powerful examples.
💤Sleep is Vital: Quality sleep helps regulate blood pressure and supports heart health. Ensure age-appropriate sleep schedules and consistent bedtime routines.
📱Screen Time Balance: Excessive screen time often means less movement. Set reasonable limits and encourage active alternatives.
👨‍👩‍👦‍👦Know Your Family History: If there's a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, or hypertension, discuss this with your paediatrician. Early screening and preventive care can make a significant difference.
🫡Lead by Example: Children mirror what they see. When we prioritise our own heart health, we're teaching them invaluable life lessons.

A healthy heart isn't built in a day – it's nurtured through consistent, loving choices. Let's give our children the gift of lifelong cardiovascular wellness💚

📢Setting the Record Straight: Paracetamol in Pregnancy & Autism

Hi everyone, it's Dr Tumi here.

Like you, I've seen the worrying headlines from the US suggesting a link between paracetamol use in pregnancy and autism.

Our leading South African obstetric and gynaecological societies (SASOG, SOOMSA, SASUOG) have reviewed the evidence and confirm a crucial finding: there is no reliable scientific evidence that taking paracetamol at recommended doses causes autism.

Earlier studies suggesting a link have been superseded by more robust research, which shows no causal connection.

⚠️It's vital to remember that treating pain and fever in pregnancy is important. Paracetamol remains the safest and most effective first-line treatment for these conditions.

My advice?
1. Do not stop taking prescribed paracetamol based on fear or misinformation.
2. Speak to your doctor, midwife, or paediatrician if you have any concerns.

For an expert local perspective, I highly recommend listening to this insightful interview on Radio 702 with Professor Petrus de Vries, a world-renowned expert in autism research from the Centre for Autism Research in Africa (CARA). He breaks down the science and addresses these concerns perfectly.

Let's focus on facts, not fear. Share this with anyone who might need some reassurance.

🤍✨ September is Albinism Awareness Month✨🤍

Albinism is a genetic condition where the body produces little to no melanin (the pigment that gives colour to skin, hair, and eyes). Children with albinism have the same dreams, talents, and potential as any other child; they just need a little extra protection from the sun and sometimes vision support.

To every brave little one living with albinism in South Africa: You are perfect exactly as you are! 💪🏽 Your difference is your superpower, and you belong in every classroom, playground, and dream you dare to chase. With the right sun protection and care, there's nothing you cannot achieve! 🌟

Remember: Different is beautiful. Different is strong. Different is YOU! 🫶🏽
