Don’t FALL into the road rage trap
Common Triggers That Lead to Road Rage
• Heavy Traffic: Congestion increases stress and lowers tolerance. Impatient drivers can become frustrated by minor delays, which escalates into aggressive behaviour. Anonymity: Some drivers feel emboldened behind the wheel because they believe they won’t face consequences or see the other driver again, leading to abusive or reckless actions.
• Unsafe or Erratic Driving: Encountering unpredictable driving creates fear and tension for others on the road, often provoking anger and retaliatory behaviour.
• Impatience: Drivers who are unwilling to wait often take unnecessary risks. This leads to aggressive manoeuvres and disregard for the safety of other road users.
• Disregard for Traffic Laws: When drivers routinely ignore road rules, it creates anxiety and frustration for others, increasing the likelihood of confrontations and road rage incidents, like minibus taxis.
Do remember, road rage can turn deadly
• Do you have a plan?
• Do you practice your plan?
• Do you have a phone app with a panic button, and do you test it?
• Do you leave enough space to escape?
• Do you have a plan if you are followed?
Don’t panic
• Don’t take it personally.
• Don’t engage.
• Don’t get out of your car in traffic.

Hijackings in South Africa are on the rise, with a concerning trend of more than half of these incidents occurring outside victims' residences. It is imperative to acknowledge that perpetrators often exploit distractions and reduced vigilance, making it essential to implement measures to enhance personal safety and that of your family.
To mitigate the risk of falling victim to such crimes, consider the following safety precautions:
1. Develop a strategy for identifying and responding to suspicious activity, particularly if you suspect being followed.
2. Exercise heightened awareness when entering your driveway or parking area.
3. Position your vehicle at an angle in front of your gate to facilitate a quick exit if necessary.
4. Install motion sensor lights to illuminate dark areas where potential assailants may lurk.
5. Regularly rehearse and establish protocols for safely exiting your vehicle, ensuring the prompt and secure evacuation of yourself and your loved ones in the event of a hijacking scenario.
By proactively implementing these safety measures and practising situational awareness, you can significantly reduce the vulnerability to hijacking incidents and safeguard your well-being and that of your family.
