My latest article for Bambanani “MY BIG SHOUTING DAY, BEAUTIFUL BOOK THAT ADDRESSES SIBLING RIVALRY”: Are angry feelings towards siblings ok? Sure they are. But all too often we find ourselves shrinking away from this family conflict at all costs. This article takes a psychoanalytic look at what sibling rivalry drums up in our kids and offers some simple ways to process these very hard family feelings. This is done by looking closely at a beautiful children’s book “My Big Shouting Day” by Rebecca Patterson which beautifully captures this fiery dynamic, in the gentlest of ways.

I recently read the children’s book My Big Shouting day by Rebecca Patterson and suddenly saw it with fresh eyes. On the surface this gorgeous story is about a little girl called Bella who wakes up in a very bad mood. The story follows Bella and her family throughout the day and we bear witness [....

really nails a core psychoanalytic principal here: That we simply can’t function without the Other. At the end of the day we’re in this together.

One of the most surprising things I’ve learned is that the Unconscious doesn’t need to make sense or be logical, so we can be and feel many incongruent things all at once. Without ever being aware of it

Our own inner stories determine our mental health. But when the physical dangers outside unconsciously remind us of the existing threats inside, they collude with each other in a particular way and make things feel so much worse. Which is why it’s so important to understand what these external issues trigger inside us emotionally so that you can free up your inner monologue and write your own headlines. Image Repost from via

This is one of my favorite Freud’s quotes and just one more reason why I’m a bit of a Freud groupie 😋 It brings to mind how when we are allowed to truly express ourselves in the presence of another loving and receptive person, something pretty profound happens: Not only do we get to know ourselves better but most importantly we witness that this other person stands by us and survives all that we have discovered about ourselves, and loves us in spite of all that we think, do and wish. This validation is powerful enough to break all the barriers we have put up in front of ourselves. And here lies the possibility to get out of our own way and achieve truly remarkable things.
Happy Birthday Sigmund Freud!

Imagine a world where “working” on yourself was an actual job. While that is unlikely to ever happen, what I can tell you for sure is that job or not: When you really do the inner work... the payoffs are substantial. .
