A Clear Vision, Thanks to Oculate

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Oculate for their incredible support and donation of intraocular lenses during this year’s Right to Sight initiative.

A cataract clouds the natural lens of the eye, like looking through a fogged-up window. Colors fade, faces blur, and even light feels dull. But with a clear new lens, the world comes back into focus — bright, vivid, and full of life once again.

Thanks to Oculate, our patients can once again echo the words of the song,
“I can see clearly now…”

Your generosity helped bring light, color, and clarity back into their lives.

Right to Sight 2025

We are deeply grateful to have been part of this year’s Right to Sight initiative, helping restore vision and transform lives through sight-saving cataract surgery.
At Nelspruit Eye Institute, Dr Morgan Hayes performed 8 and Dr Dean van der Westhuizen performed 19 pro bono cataract surgeries — giving 27 patients the precious gift of clear vision.

One patient’s words captured the spirit of the day perfectly: “I can now see the smiles on your faces.”

A heartfelt thank you to Busamed Lowveld Hospital and their incredible staff for their generosity, teamwork, and compassion in making this special day possible. Together, we are truly changing lives — one eye at a time.

The Importance of Yearly Diabetic Eye Screenings :
Diabetes can silently damage your eyes before you notice any symptoms.
Annual screenings help detect:
- Early signs of retinopathy
- Macular edema
- Changes in blood vessels

Takeaway: Early intervention can save your sight.

The human eye can distinguish about 10 million different colors! That’s pretty amazing when you think about it – your eyes are like nature’s built-in color palette. This incredible ability comes from specialized cells in your retina called cones. These cones are sensitive to different wavelengths of light, which help you see everything from the softest pastels to the most vibrant hues. It’s no wonder our world feels so colorful!

Happy Family Day from the Nelspruit Eye Institute!
Did you know your family’s eye health can be interconnected? Many eye conditions, like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and even certain refractive errors (like nearsightedness), can run in families! Regular eye exams for all ages are important to detect these conditions early and keep everyone’s vision in check.

Keratoconus & Cross-Linking
Keratoconus is a progressive condition where the cornea thins and bulges, leading to vision distortion. Early diagnosis is key for managing the condition effectively.
Recently, Dr. Hayes presented on Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL) to our local optometrists. This innovative treatment strengthens the cornea using UV light and riboflavin, helping to slow or halt the progression of keratoconus and potentially avoid the need for a corneal transplant.
If you’re experiencing symptoms of keratoconus, early intervention with CXL could help protect your vision.

Your brain actually "sees" everything upside down!
When light enters your eyes, it passes through the cornea and lens, forming an inverted image on the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye). The retinal cells (rods and cones) send electrical signals to the brain via the optic nerve. Your brain then processes these signals and flips the image right-side up in the visual cortex. It’s like a built-in optical illusion – and your brain does it without you even realizing! Talk about a brain workout!

Your eyes' lens can change shape to focus on objects at different distances – this is called accommodation!
When you look at something close up, your lens becomes thicker and rounder to focus on near objects. On the flip side, when you look at something far away, the lens flattens to focus on distant objects. It's like your eyes have built-in zoom – no camera required!

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50. It affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision, making tasks like reading and driving difficult.
🔸 Dry AMD: Gradual breakdown of the macula.
🔸 Wet AMD: Abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, causing rapid vision loss.
To detect early changes, use an Amsler Grid at home. It helps spot vision distortions, like wavy lines or dark spots, which may indicate AMD.

Understanding Pterygiums - A pterygium is a benign growth of tissue on the eye, usually on the white part (sclera) near the cornea. It often develops due to prolonged exposure to UV light, dust, or wind.

- What To Watch Out For:
Redness or irritation
A visible growth on the eye
Blurry or distorted vision (in advanced cases)

While often harmless, a pterygium can cause discomfort or affect vision. Protect your eyes from UV rays with sunglasses and regular check-ups!

Understanding Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often due to high eye pressure. It’s a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.

Fact: Early detection is key because glaucoma often has no symptoms until vision loss occurs. Feel free to visit us at https://nelspruiteyeinstitute.co.za/ for all the details you need. Vision for a clearer future!"

About Us

The Nelspruit eye Instititute was started by Dr Roelie van Rooyen as a solo practice in 1974, after which it was taken over by Dr Danie Louw in 1986. He was later joined by Dr Carl Wilms in 1989. Together they built The Nelspruit Eye Institute into a centre of excellence in the Lowveld.

Dr Louw and Dr Wilms, now retiring from private practice, are handing over the reins to Dr Dean van der Westhuizen and Dr Morgan Hayes who aspire to continue the legacy that has already been established.

Nelspruit Eye Institute has a vision for a clearer future, for the institution itself and for the patients it serves.
