Sakabula Country Estate

Sakabula Country Estate Sakabula Country Estate is a unique, lifestyle-focused estate - offering its residents secure, safe and country style living It is a unique lifestyle!

The "Sakabula" is isiZulu for the Long-Tailed Widowbird. The Sakabula Country Estate (SCE) is a residential estate which embrace all things “country”. We value …
o a COUNTRY Lifestyle
o the Safety and Security of our gated estate
o a Natural (Eco), Animal & Wildlife Friendly Environment
o the Space afforded by the large plots
o the relative Affordability vs similar alternatives
o the Freedom of Movement for adults and children to walk, run, ride etc. o the fact that we own Freehold Stands
o that non-intrusive Agriculture and hobby-farming is promoted
o our Families
o the Community of like-minded people we live with
o things Equestrian
o the Natural Beauty of the estate and surrounds
o the Golf Course on our doorstep

The Estate is located in the beautiful KZN Midlands - in the Merrivale District (just outside Howick). It sports breathtaking views over Midmar dam to the Drakensberg to the west and the Karkloof Range to the north. It supports impressive herds of Reedbuck, as well as Duiker, Mongoose and Genet - yet it is not an Eco-Estate. It contains within its bounds a privately owned 18-hole course - yet it is not a Golf Estate. Its minimum plot size is 2Ha and non-intrusive agricultural and hobby-farming is encouraged - yet it is not specifically an Agricultural Estate. Sakabula Country Estate can therefore only be described as a unique, lifestyle-focused estate. Sakabula was founded in 1995, by the visionary Mr Gerrie De Jong, through the consolidation of 12 farms in the Merrivale area. Clearing for roadways, demarcation of plots and construction of the Golf Course all started in 1996. Today Sakabula comprises 102 freehold, rural residential plots of approx 2Ha each, surrounding the now park-like area of the Sakabula Golf Course - all within a secure electric fence. Security is closely monitored with controlled access, guards in 24 hours attendance and night-time patrols. The last plots were sold by the developer back in 2010 and approximately 75% of the properties have been developed. Many homeowners choose to keep limited numbers of livestock e.g. cattle, sheep, alpacas and horses (and donkeys), thereby adding to the unique country atmosphere. Owner builders are allowed considerable scope and opportunity to create a home of their own style and design provided certain standards of materials and construction are met. Local amenities include a wide variety of shops, supermarkets and businesses as well as the modern Howick Hospital and nearby Medical Specialist rooms. With some of South Africa’s finest schools in the surrounding area and positioned close to the N3 freeway Sakabula Country Estate is an ideal home for commuting professionals and young families who prefer the enjoyment and benefits of country living close to town.

They say you can retire from farming… but farming never quite retires from you 🚜

Every now and then, when a ploughing job pops up and we’re all looking around wondering who’s brave (or skilled!) enough to tackle it… we quietly call in our secret weapon.

Our very own legendary farmer lady.

At an age when most people are putting their feet up, she’s climbing into the tractor like she never left it. Engine on, focus locked in, lines straighter than a ruler — and not a hint of fuss about it.

Honestly, isn’t it wonderful to see? Proof that experience doesn’t fade… it just waits patiently in the shed until it’s needed again.

We may have to “rein her in” occasionally — but behind that wheel, she’s still got it. And we’re lucky to witness it. 🌾🚜

Here’s to strong women, steady hands, and tractors that know who’s boss.

What a truly special day for our residents! 🌿✨

We were treated to the breathtaking sight of some beautiful Grey Crowned Cranes today on the Sakabula Golf Course. These magnificent birds, known for their striking golden “crown” of feathers and elegant courtship dances, are one of Africa’s most iconic and regal species. Seeing them up close was a rare and unforgettable experience for everyone.

A heartfelt thank you to Chris and Gene for so graciously allowing us to share in and capture these incredible moments on their beautiful course. We are so grateful for your kindness and support.

The Protea 🌺
South Africa’s national flower and a powerful symbol of resilience, diversity, and transformation.
Just like our country, the Protea thrives in tough conditions and still blooms boldly. A reminder that strength and beauty often grow side by side. 🇿🇦✨

Did you know the Grey Crowned Crane is one of the only crane species that can roost in trees? 🌳😲 Those long toes aren’t just elegant — they’re made for gripping branches!

🌙✨ A Rare Night-Time Bloom on Our Estate! ✨🌙

One of our residents captured these stunning photos of Dragon Fruit flowers just beginning to open — a moment not many get to witness 🌸📸

Dragon Fruit flowers are night bloomers, opening only after dark and lasting for just a few magical hours. Even more special? They’re pollinated by bats 🦇 and moths 🦋, guided by the soft glow of moonlight 🌕. This moonlit pollination happens only on rare occasions, making these images truly something special.

Nature putting on a quiet, beautiful show — right here at home 💚
Have you ever seen a Dragon Fruit flower bloom at night? 👀✨
