ULTRASOUND THERAPY FOR ANKLE SPRAIN

Ultrasound is not proven to be effective for treating ankle sprains, with reviews finding that it does not significantly improve pain, swelling, or function. While some clinicians believe it may help healing by increasing blood flow, scientific evidence supporting therapeutic ultrasound for ankle sprains is limited and inconclusive. Instead of therapeutic ultrasound, RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and physiotherapy are recommended, and ultrasound imaging is sometimes used to diagnose the extent of the injury.

SHOULDER PAIN AND ELECTRO DRY NEEDLING

Electrodry needling (or dry needling with electrical stimulation) is an effective and safe technique for treating shoulder pain, particularly when used as part of a comprehensive physiotherapy program that includes exercise and manual therapy. While it may provide clinically significant improvements in pain and disability, evidence suggests it is not statistically significantly more effective than conventional physiotherapy alone.

STRAIGHT LEG TEST

A seated variation of the straight leg raise (SLR), known as the Bechterew test or sitting SLR test, is a diagnostic test used by physiotherapists to assess for sciatica, a condition often caused by nerve root irritation or a herniated disc in the lower spine.

CUPPING AND SHOULDER PAIN

In physiotherapy, cupping for shoulder pain involves placing suction cups on the skin to increase blood flow, release muscle tension, and reduce inflammation, which can help improve mobility and alleviate pain.

The cups can be placed statically or moved over the skin, and while you may feel a pulling sensation, the process is generally well-tolerated and can be adjusted for your comfort. Temporary redness or bruising is common and usually fades in a few days.

WHIPLASH INJURY

Physiotherapy for whiplash involves a multi-faceted approach to reduce pain and restore function through gentle stretching, range-of-motion exercises, strengthening, and manual therapy. Treatments are tailored to the individual and may include soft tissue techniques like massage, posture correction, and modalities like heat/cold therapy or TENS to alleviate muscle tension, stiffness, and inflammation.

The goal is to improve neck and upper back mobility, build supportive muscles, and help the individual return to normal activities safely.

CERVICOGENIC HEADACHES

Dry needling can help with cervicogenic headaches by releasing tension in neck and upper back muscles, improving blood flow, and reducing nerve irritation. It involves inserting thin needles into trigger points to elicit a twitch response that relieves muscle tightness and promotes healing.

Studies suggest it can reduce pain and improve neck mobility for cervicogenic headaches, particularly when combined with other physiotherapy.

ANKLE AND FOOT

Physiotherapy for runners’ ankles and feet focuses on improving mobility, strength, and stability to prevent and treat injuries. Key components include exercises like calf raises, toe taps, and balance drills to build strength, along with mobility work and soft tissue release to address stiffness. Proper footwear, pain management, and progressive loading are also critical for a successful return to running and long-term health.

SHOULDER PAIN

Physiotherapy for shoulder pain typically involves a combination of exercises to improve range of motion, strengthen muscles, and restore function, along with modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation to reduce pain and inflammation.

Common exercises include pendulum swings, towel stretches, and external/internal rotation exercises with resistance bands to address various aspects of the shoulder’s movement and stability. A physical therapist can create a personalized plan and may also use taping to support the shoulder during recovery.

KNEE MOBILISATION

Knee mobilization is a hands-on physiotherapy technique where the physiotherapist applies manual force to move the knee joint, including the tibia, patella, and fibula, to improve range of motion and reduce pain.

It is used for issues like post-surgical stiffness, osteoarthritis, or injuries, and often combined with other exercises.

The physiotherapist uses various grades and types of mobilizations, such as Maitland’s grades, which involve slow, gentle oscillations to address the root cause of stiffness.

DRY NEEDLING AND LOW BACK PAKN

Dry needling can be an effective treatment for acute low back pain by targeting trigger points in the muscles to reduce pain, tension, and spasm. It involves inserting thin needles into tight muscle bands to create a micro-lesion, which helps restore blood flow, release tension, and trigger the body’s natural pain-relief mechanisms, potentially providing immediate relief for some.
