On 23 October 2025, the 𝗔𝗫𝗜𝗠 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 had the pleasure of engaging with third-year 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 (𝗕𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿) students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (𝗨𝗞𝗭𝗡).

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱:

It was an inspiring morning with over 𝟰𝟱 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀, filled with thoughtful questions and discussion about the evolving landscape of dental care in South Africa.

On 14 August 2025, 𝗔𝗫𝗜𝗠 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 had the privilege of engaging with approximately 80 Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students from the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th years at the 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀.

The foundations of modern reconstructive surgery trace back over a century?

𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗷𝗮𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁𝘀 using autogenous bone grafts, including innovative rib grafts, began in the late 19th century by European surgeons. 🦷

These groundbreaking techniques evolved significantly throughout the 20th century, laying the groundwork for today's sophisticated reconstructive procedures.

What started as experimental surgery has become routine practice, 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀.

It's remarkable how far we've progressed from those early pioneers to today's microsurgical techniques and 3D-guided procedures! 🏥⚕️
