In 2023, Dermalogica flew me to Cape Town to attend the launch of Skin in the Game by Jane Wurwand.

I remember sitting there thinking — this is the industry I chose.

I learned Dermalogica in school. I studied the formulas. I studied the philosophy. And here I was, watching the founder sign my book, having a real conversation about resilience, risk, and building something that lasts.

Jane didn’t just build a skincare brand. She built a global professional movement. A billion-dollar empire rooted in education, independence, and courage. Her story isn’t polished. It’s real. Reinvention. Survival. Starting again when life throws your clothes outside and tells you it’s over.

That moment in Cape Town reminded me:

The beauty industry is not small.
It is not shallow.
It is not just “facials.”

It is business.
It is science.
It is community.
It is power.

And if we are going to win — especially in the township — we cannot win alone.

We cannot stay in our own corners.
We cannot compete in silence.
We must collaborate. Educate. Elevate.

That is why Dermalogica sits proudly in my shop.

Our industry keeps mistaking paper for proof.
Certificates are treated as competence. Location is treated as value. Longevity is treated as credibility. Meanwhile, real skill, real experience, and real work are consistently ignored.

Township excellence is priced lower, self-taught practitioners are dismissed, and seasoned professionals are erased by deregistered qualifications — not because they lack ability, but because they don’t fit outdated systems. Spa owners are left exposed, trust keeps failing, and clients pay the price.

This is not a talent problem.
It is a systems failure.

Every other industry has evolved with technology, data, and accountability. Ours is still governed by gatekeeping that rewards attendance over mastery and paperwork over practice.

We're genuinely grateful to welcome Charmaine from and Nkhensani from Lady T Spa & Beauty Academy into our space.

The Blend Wellness has always been more than a MedSpa — it’s a training ground, a place of exposure, and a space where people grow through real work, not shortcuts. I love hosting students and emerging professionals because industries don’t grow by guarding knowledge, they grow by sharing it responsibly.

Over the years, I’ve had the honour of training and mentoring many individuals here at Mall of Thembisa — some experienced, some starting from scratch — all within a real, working environment that demands discipline, respect, and integrity.

As I continue to grow as an Assessor and Moderator, I’m learning that this work is bigger than me.
It’s not about ego.
It’s about building people, systems, and a work culture that lasts.

Like the saying goes: this work is not for ourselves — it’s for our people.
