Now that we know a little bit more about piriformis syndrome, how does one go about diagnosing this condition?

While there is no definitive way to diagnose piriformis syndrome, there are tests that your chiropractor may use to make a diagnosis.

Your medical history and a series of physical tests will allow your chiropractor to make a diagnosis based on what activity affects your pain.

In worst case scenarios your chiropractor may refer you to a specialist for more advanced imaging.

Definition of the day

Posture:
(1) The attitude of the body. (2) The relative arrangement of the parts of the body. Good posture is that state of muscular and skeletal balance that protects the supporting structures of the body against injury or progressive deformity irrespective of the attitude (erect, lying, squatting, stooping) in which the structures are working or resting.

TOP TIP

Mowing your lawn is not something that happens on a daily basis. As a result you may experience tired and aching muscles from this activity.

Most back pain related to garden work is due to the change in posture as well as the length of time spent doing the task with little to no breaks in between.

Protect your back from mowing-related injuries with the following tips:
• Take regular breaks from your tasks
• Try to not twist your spine around while pushing the lawnmower
• Try and keep your back as straight as possible
• Do gentle stretches before and after mowing the lawn to help soothe back pain

Are your children backpack kids? Or do they prefer a bag with a single strap for their school day?

The type and way they use their school bag has a huge impact on their long-term spinal health.

In the October Medical Monday slot, we will be unpacking all things school bag related.
While backpacks remain a firm favourite for better backs, some learners may only have the option of using a single shoulder strap bag. In either situation, the way in which the bag is worn can mitigate the effects of back pain.

How will I know if the school bag is the problem and causing my child’s pain?

Look out for these common tell-tale signs:
• Complaints of neck ache and back pain
• Battling to lift the bag up due to the size and weight of the bag
• Red marks on their shoulders
• Headache at the base of the skull
• Hands and fingers feeling numb
• Your child is being pulled to one direction or is leaning forward due to the weight of bag
