Laziness is an intentional unwillingness to work. If you find yourself struggling with something you WANT to do or wish you COULD do because it would eliminate shame/guilt/frustration but you just can't make yourself do it - that's not laziness. That resistance is a sign of something deeper. Instead of criticizing or shaming, we need to understand the "why".
For example - I used to leave dirty dishes piled up in my sink for months to the point that it was disgusting and I was disgusted with myself. Was I lazy? No. I was...
- Struggling with depression
- Overwhelmed with anxiety
- Didn't know where to start
- And felt so exhausted all of the time that some days it was hard to get out of bed
But I shamed myself by telling myself I was lazy so on top of that I felt like a failure and a bad person.
Everyone has moments when they feel unmotivated or less inclined to work. It's a natural part of being human but so many people also have executive dysfunction issues that have nothing to do with not wanting to do something and everything to do with not knowing how to overcome the internal thing that's stopping them. So, I encourage you to approach "laziness" with compassion and understanding (especially within yourself!)
