We attended the NMCF Knowledge & Learning workshop in Johannesburg this week. It has been an inspiring few days collaborating with the other Girl Power partners. Together, we are reinforcing our commitment to preventing violence against children and building safer, more resilient communities across South Africa.

GBV remains an ongoing crisis in our country. At Khululeka, we believe in equipping caregivers with the knowledge and tools needed to support and uplift our communities.
Last week, we trained 31 GBV ambassadors, community workers, and NGOs from Delft through our Girl Power programme, strengthening the vital work they do every day.
Together, we continue to build safer, stronger communities. đź’ś

This year, for Human Rights Day, South Africa marks 30 years of the Bill of Rights under the theme: “Making Human Dignity Real.” Rooted in the legacy of the Sharpeville Massacre, this day reminds us that the rights we uphold today were hard won through sacrifice and collective struggle led by leaders like Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe.

For children, human rights are not abstract. They mean safety, dignity, access to education, and the ability to grow free from violence and exclusion.

As we mark 30 years of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, we are reminded that advancing children’s rights is central to making dignity real, not just in principle, but in practice.

During our mentoring visit at Etafeni their Abangane facilitator, Sis Unathi, shared the powerful work she does in helping children understand their grief. Creating safe spaces for young hearts to heal is not just work, it is purpose.

Our M&E team, together with our Board Programmes Portfolio team, have been engaged in a review of our Theory of Change to ensure that it reflects the growth and evolution of Khululeka’s programmes. This important process helps us to refine how we understand our impact, strengthen our M&E and ensure that our work continues to respond effectively to the needs of the children and communities we serve.
Taking the time to reflect, learn and adapt is an essential part of strengthening our programmes and expanding our reach.

Our Director Wendy Lessing completed the NGO Whisperer Global Fellowship Programme in 2024.
We were both honoured and surprised to learn that she had been selected as the 2025 Social Justice Alumni of the Year at the recent 5th Graduation and Awards Ceremony. This recognition reflects the work of the Khululeka team and our shared commitment to supporting children and young people navigating grief and trauma. We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of a global community of leaders working for social justice.

We recently said goodbye to our intern Zintle Plaatjie. During her time with Khululeka, Zintle quickly became a valued member of the team. She brought creativity, enthusiasm and fresh ideas to our communications work, contributing to content creation and marketing across our platforms. Zintle also leaves a special legacy. She designed our 20th anniversary logo, which will remain a meaningful part of our celebrations this year.
We wish her every success as she begins this exciting new chapter in her career. A sincere thank you to iKasi Media and the MICT SETA for this valuable internship programme that creates opportunities for young people to grow their skills and experience.

During our Abangane support group at Ravensmead High, the girls are introduced to a short mindfulness exercise at the start of each session. We have found that this practice helps to create a safe and contained space, allowing participants to slow down, regulate their emotions and feel calm before sharing their personal stories. Mindfulness supports their ability to reflect, listen to one another and engage more openly in the group process.
