Khululeka Grief Support has begun mentoring within the Abangane programme for trained, WCDSD-funded organisations. Masithembele EnrichmentCentre , in Delft, is the first organisation we are engaging with as part of this process. This work reflects our commitment to building informed, compassionate networks of care for young people experiencing grief and trauma.

Today, we share reflections from the last group of girls who have completed the Abangane support group at Fezeka High. Their voices remind us that young people are not defined by their loss. When given space to reflect, speak and heal, they discover strength, understanding and hope within themselves.

At Hindle High, our Abangane girls chose courage. They shared their stories of loss with their peers, speaking openly about grief that is so often carried in silence. At Khululeka, we believe that grief is not something to hide or rush through. It deserves space, compassion and care. Speaking about loss is an act of bravery and today, these young women remind us that healing begins when we are seen and heard.

As the week comes to a close, we pause to acknowledge every child and caregiver walking the journey of grief. Grief does not follow a timeline, and healing happens in small, quiet steps. At Khululeka Grief Support, we continue to create safe spaces where children can feel seen, supported, and understood. Thank you to our community for walking this journey with us.

Grief looks different for every child, and there is no “right” way to grieve. This week, we’re gently recommending a research-based article by Kirti Bhati that speaks to how grief can sometimes feel overwhelming when it lingers over time, often referred to as prolonged grief. For caregivers, educators, and anyone walking alongside a grieving child, learning more about grief helps us respond with compassion, patience, and understanding. A link to the full article is available for those who would like to read more.

Last week, our team visited Hindle High School to conduct selection questionnaires and spend time in conversation with the school social worker Intern. These sessions help us better understand the needs of learners and how we can support them in safe and meaningful ways. Listening carefully is always the first step in supporting young people through grief and loss.

We are grateful for every beneficiary who shows up, participates, and chooses healing one step at a time.
