The quality of your data is only as good as the diversity of voices behind it.

When people with mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities are excluded from monitoring and evaluating social protection programmes, we don't just lose their perspective, we lose accuracy. We miss barriers that never make it into reports. We design solutions for a version of the problem that isn't quite real.

Equity-focused guidelines on issues like the disability employment gap, school dropout rates, and poverty need to be built and assessed with the communities they serve. That's not idealism but good governance.

What would change in your community if lived experience were treated as expertise?

There's a question that is rarely asked. How many of the policies designed to protect vulnerable communities were developed by those communities?

Mental health is connected to economic security, fair employment, access to education, and freedom from discrimination. Social protection programmes that overlook the voices of people with lived experience, such as those navigating mental health conditions, disability, poverty, or systemic racism, create structural gaps.

Who's at your policy table? And who's still missing?

Is the rise in mental health conditions real, or are we pathologizing normal human experience? The honest answer is: both conversations matter. Research using detailed clinical interviews confirms the increase is largely real and sustained. But awareness, while powerful, can sometimes blur the line between ordinary stress and a diagnosable condition. Nuance is not the enemy of advocacy. It is what makes advocacy credible.

Our African region chaired by Philani Ama Kinyabo hosted a session on the Tree of Life exercise.

Participants described the experience as emotional, therapeutic and transformative. Themes of family, healing and resilience came through strongly and many reflected on how far they've come with a deeper appreciation for themselves and their support systems.

For mental health advocates, exercises like the Tree of Life are vitally important. They create safe spaces for reflections and strengthen connection and empathy for all involved. It also reminds us of the power of shared healing. Advocating can be emotionally demanding and taking the time to sit with yourself creates a much needed space to reflect and restore.

We thank Philani for holding the space with such kindness and grace and for leading this wonderful initiative.

What good is a mental health plan that remains on paper? According to the Mental Health Atlas 2024, only 16% of countries have fully allocated financial resources to implement their policies. Behind every percentage point is a person who needed support and did not get it. We can and must do better.

Reintegrating into civilian life isn't just a healthcare conversation. It's about housing, financial stability, education, career pathways, and genuine community belonging. Veterans and their families deserve a full ecosystem of support, not just a prescription. It's time our policies reflect that.

The transition from military to civilian life is a complex journey, and the mental health impacts of service cannot be overlooked.

Defense institutions and veterans’ services play a vital, foundational role in addressing the psychological effects of trauma, institutional culture, and reintegration.

Thanking veterans for their service is not enough; we must actively build systems that support their mental well-being long after their deployment ends.

By prioritizing comprehensive mental health policies, we can help service members navigate the unique challenges of military life and successfully transition back into their communities.

How can communities better support veterans during their transition to civilian life?

Protecting the mental health of our service members means looking closely at institutional culture.

A critical policy directive for defense institutions must be the prevention of harassment, violence, and abuse during service.
However, policy alone isn't enough; a cultural transformation is required.

This means enforcing uncompromising safeguards against abuse, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health through targeted awareness and training, and implementing strict anti-discrimination measures with clear reporting and redress mechanisms.

When service members feel safe seeking help without fear of discrimination or career repercussions, we build a stronger, more resilient force.

Mental health support for service members must be integrated into every stage of their career.

Effective policy must promote well-being throughout the entire deployment cycle.

We must prioritize comprehensive su***de prevention programs and ensure that all service members have immediate access to rights-based, trauma-informed mental health services.

Proactive care saves lives.

When a service member deploys, their family serves alongside them.

Comprehensive military mental health policies must look beyond the individual and provide targeted support for families throughout the entire deployment cycle.

The stress of deployment, separation, and reintegration impacts the whole family unit.

Furthermore, to strengthen mental health literacy and encourage help-seeking behaviors, defense institutions must invest in peer support networks, anti-stigma education, and specialized training for military mental health professionals and leadership.

Support systems are strongest when they empower the entire community.

"We did the best with the budget we had." How often do we hear this when it comes to lived experience inclusion?

A common barrier to meaningful inclusion of Lived Experience in mental health research is the myth of resource scarcity.

This narrative is used to justify nominal honoraria, single consultative roles, and a complete lack of funding for skill and capacity building.

Lived Experience is a priority; it must be budgeted for from the conceptualization stage.

Ethical inclusion demands investment, fair remuneration, emergency funds, and institutional support, which are non-negotiable.
