Who's who in the zoo?!

Let's meet Jani Truter. She is our go-to for anything relating to breastfeeding, and a favourite among the little ones!

Jani grew up in Somerset West and qualified as a Speech-Language and Hearing Therapist in 2023 at Stellenbosch University. She completed her community service in the small rural town of Hartswater in the Northern Cape.

Jani has special love for working with young children and she is passionate about helping children unlock their full potential. She has a special interest in working with babies and supporting breastfeeding. Jani is currently completing her lactation certification (SACLC) to expand her skills in this area and support new moms.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time outdoors, travelling, and being active. She also loves experimenting in the kitchen! It is not uncommon for her weekend news to include baking or hosting of some sort.

Jani is a firm believer that children teach us just as much as we teach them and their curiosity and unique way of seeing the world inspire her daily.

And here is our toy gift guide for 4-6 year olds. During this exciting phase, children's language starts to mature and we see them utilising these new-found skills in longer conversations, stories and while playing with others. This enables them to collaborate with friends using the same set of rules or play idea. The fun part about shopping for these little ones is that we can buy less concrete toys - they will find a way to turn it into magic!

Oh, the drama! This is the age where the little ones start to display dramatic play, and their language continues to become more complex. They also start to tell stories, which is a blast to listen to! Here are some of our favourite picks for kiddos 3-4 years of age.

And here we go! Here is our first toy guides for the holiday. 🎁

We are focusing on the little ones today - specifically the 0-3 and 3-6 month age range. We may or may not have been inspired by Jolané's Christmas list for her little baba 😉

We have carefully selected toys that we would highly recommend to assist in the development of communication, play and feeding milestones.

All these suggestions are however added extras to the most important toy... MOM AND DAD! As you may see, most of the milestones in these age ranges focus on interaction and engagement, and this isn't something a toy can teach.

If you are looking for some gifts for baby showers or your own baba for the holidays, try some of these.

Yesterday we celebrated our year with some tea and spoils at the magical Mount Nelson.

We are grateful for team work this year, for being able to expand our skillset and impact by taking hands with other professionals, teachers, parents and family. We salute the families who kept showing up and working hard, and the little ones who teach us that determination can break through any barrier or ceiling set by society - that there truly is hope in every case, you just have to want to find it.

To our team of speechies - thank you for your hard work, dedication and passion.

We look forward to 2026!

Being the one to help someone find a voice is a privilege we do not take lightly. We see all of the long hours you spend making new materials, writing therapy plans and reports and guiding parents and other professionals every day. We see how much of your heart and soul you pour into each client's journey - how you cry for their losses and celebrate their victories. We see how you think about the clients you serve before you go to bed, making mental notes about your next session for each one. We see the times where you say no to your own family, in order to say yes to another. We see the time and money you invest in upskilling yourself so that you can be the best therapist to everyone walking through your office doors.

We see you, and we salute you!

This is a difficult job, but boy, is it worth it! 🩷
