Partners in Sexual Health recently visited Northway Primary School to host interactive Grade 7 sessions on anti-bullying and healthy relationships. With the rise of disturbing videos showing violence among learners across South Africa, these conversations are more important than ever. Our team created a safe, supportive space where learners could openly explore how bullying affects their peers, their school environment, and their own wellbeing.

Through these sessions learners were empowered to recognise harmful behaviours, build empathy, resolve conflict peacefully, and form respectful relationships. By equipping young people with these skills, we aim to strengthen their confidence, promote kindness, and support schools in creating safer, more nurturing environments. Together, we can help shape a generation that chooses respect over violence.

"BACK TO SCHOOL" INITIATIVE IN THE WEST COAST FOR MANDELA DAY 2025: This initiative goes beyond simply providing free salon and barber services to learners; it is about restoring dignity, boosting confidence, and removing a potential barrier to learning. Nelson Mandela himself championed the idea of dignity for all, and a fresh hairstyle can significantly impact a learner's self-esteem and readiness for school. It is a practical and tangible way to make a difference in their lives, embodying the "67 minutes" call to action. A huge ‘Thank You’ to all the youth hairstylists and barbers for giving back to their community.

"A society that does not value its older people denies its roots and endangers its future." This powerful quote, attributed to Nelson Mandela himself, reminds us that honouring our elders is not just an act of kindness; it is an affirmation of our collective history, wisdom, and continuity.

This past Mandela Day, PSH West Coast and various stakeholders honoured their elderly in grand fashion. Our sincere gratitude to all the stakeholders for ensuring that elders are not forgotten or marginalised.

PSH’s National Office celebrated Youth Day at the Lavender Hill Sports Facilities at a joint event with the Department of Social Development, City of Cape Town, SOZO Foundation, South African Police Service, various Youth Clubs, Youth Cafes, and other Civil Society Organisations.

The central theme of this Youth Day event was a powerful "Call to Action to Accelerate Youth Employment", aiming to address the critical issue of joblessness among young people. The day's activities were diverse and engaging, featuring Career Exhibitions to connect youth with potential opportunities, Skills Development to equip them with valuable tools, and uplifting displays of Sports, Arts, and Culture to foster community and highlight talent.

PSH Colesberg celebrated International Day of the Boy Child and Child Protection Week in May with two special initiatives, generously supported by the Social Employment Fund. They hosted a feeding scheme outreach and toy giveaway, aiming to instil a sense of self-worth in children. The outreaches also encouraged young boys and girls to voice their opinions, emphasising their right to be recognised, loved, and protected from all forms of abuse.

PSH and PSH Radio accepted an invitation from the Department of Education to co-host a powerful and engaging school outreach event at Bellville South High School, focussed on tackling three critical issues facing learners today: Bullying, Teenage Pregnancy, and Gender-based Violence.

This vibrant and interactive experience for Grade 8 and 9 learners seamlessly combined education, entertainment, and access to vital health services from our Mobile Clinic, all in one dynamic setting.

PSH’s Health Promoters in Aliwal North recently participated in a community safety meeting focused on combating Gender-based Violence (GBV). This collaborative effort brought together the SAPS, Social Development representatives, and other key stakeholders to strategise on GBV prevention and survivor support.

PSH members actively contributed their expertise and insights to the discussions, helping to foster a comprehensive approach to addressing GBV within the community. Beyond the meeting's primary objectives, a donation drive was organised, providing clothing to community members. This initiative underscored PSH's broader commitment to the community’s wellbeing.

WHAT AN AMAZING ACHIEVEMENT! We are proud to announce that our first cohort of Health Promotion Officer (HPO) students has secured valuable work placements within key government departments such as the Department of Health, Department of Education, etc. This practical experience is a crucial step in their professional development.

These enthusiastic and dedicated young individuals are participants in our free, accredited Health Promotion Officer (HPO) course, made possible through PSH’s Common Good Youth SRHR Project and the generous support of the Social Employment Fund.

We commend these students for their unwavering commitment to building brighter futures by seizing the opportunities we have been able to provide!

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Department of Agriculture for their generous sponsorship of compost, seeds, and gardening tools to our Beaufort West office. This impactful initiative will empower Gender-Based Violence (GBV) survivors to cultivate their own gardens, fostering independence, self-sufficiency, and financial well-being.

April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a crucial time when PSH advocates, survivors, their support systems, and the wider community unite. Together, we engaged in open dialogue about sexual violence, offered vital support to survivors, expanded public understanding and awareness, and pinpointed effective strategies and resources aimed at preventing sexual and gender-based violence.

One of the events included PSH Colesberg hosting a dialogue to prevent Sexual Assault with Grade 12 learners at Umso High School.

In the above spirit, PSH Elands Bay co-hosted a Health and Wellness Sports Day to celebrate Freedom Day with adolescents and youth from their community. We sincerely thank the community and other stakeholders for making the day a huge success: Transnet, HP Holdings, Cederberg Municipal Councillor Paul Struss and Buhle Mndweni from the Community Development Workers.
