"Could learning music be the ultimate brain booster for children?
A new study from MIT suggests that music education may have more profound effects on young brains than coding lessons alone. Researchers found that children who regularly practice instruments or participate in structured music programs show stronger neural connections and improved cognitive development.
The study compared kids learning coding skills with those engaging in music lessons over several months. While coding helps with logic and problem-solving, music seems to stimulate multiple areas of the brain simultaneously, enhancing memory, attention, language skills, and emotional regulation. Functional MRI scans revealed that musical training strengthens networks that are crucial for overall intelligence and learning capacity.
Experts believe this may be because music requires simultaneous processing of rhythm, pitch, melody, and coordination, challenging the brain in ways coding alone does not. It also encourages creativity, teamwork, and persistence, skills that benefit academic performance and social development.
