Reconnecting with family again
written by current resident W.S.
“I appreciate what Pelgrims Place has done for me in terms of reconnecting with my family. Long-term rehabilitation has given my family time to heal and recover from my past mistakes. They can see that I am making an effort to change, and I am grateful that they are still around after everything I put them through. I want to make my family proud. I want them to be able to depend on me again. Taking responsibility hasn’t been easy, but working through hardships in life makes us stronger, and I believe my 9-month program has made me much more mentally tough. I am not a drunk, argumentative, difficult person, and when I am sober, I am actually a pretty nice guy. I love my family, and I can’t wait to spend more time with them.”

📣We are so proud to announce that we’ve officially held our first in-house AA meeting here at Pelgrims Place!
This meeting is now a permanent fixture in our weekly program schedule. By bringing these sessions directly to our residents, we aim to:
Build a Strong Foundation: Equip everyone with a deep understanding of AA and NA principles.
Prepare for the Future: Ensure our residents have the tools and knowledge they need to navigate recovery long after they leave our doors.
Foster Community: Create a safe, familiar space to share experiences and strength.

Recovery doesn't happen in a vacuum—it happens through connection and preparation. We’re excited to see this new chapter empower our residents on their journey to lifelong sobriety.

Cook Off
written by current resident P.D.

“Like Batman, Puerman, Spiderman or any other superhero of our time, I lived a double life. Just take away the ‘hero’, and I guess the ‘super’, the only super I was, was more and more superstitious as I ventured further into psychosis. Chef by day, chemist by night. Cooking for money and cooking o***m tincture. Cooking to fuel an addiction.
Those days are over.
I now cook with different ingredients; 2 cups of mindfulness, 5 tbsps of routine, a dash of service. Simmer for 6 months and wala! Your entree is served. This is the recovery cook off.”

Recovery is more than breaking a habit — it’s rebuilding a life. It’s not only about what you stop doing, but about rediscovering who you truly are beneath the addiction, the pain, or the coping mechanisms. Healing begins when focus shifts from what I’ve done to who I am becoming.

Self-exploration takes courage.
Who are you without the addiction?
What do you value?
What brings you peace?
What kind of person do you want to be?

The “I Am” poem is a powerful tool for this journey. It helps you reconnect with your identity, voice your hopes, and acknowledge both your struggles and your strengths.

Keeping things safe while we sharpen our skills! 🛠️
We recently hosted an impactful Health and Safety Workshop at Pelgrims Place Rehabilitation Center.
Our team and residents dove deep into "workshopping" the essential equipment used across our campus—from the precision of the kitchen to the heavy-duty tools in our workshops.
Safety isn’t just about gear; it’s about rhythm. We explored how to integrate safety into therapeutic gardening and mindfulness cleaning, while refining our time allocations for skills development.
Empowering our community to work smarter, safer, and with more intention every single day. 🌿✨

A very important aspect of recovery is to get involved in helping the community and giving back. In December, we helped local kids build and 'soup up' their go-karts for an annual community kaskar race 🏁

Much fun was had by all, and residents learned the value of community & helping others firsthand.

My understanding of step 1, 2 & 3
written by P.W current resident
"Step One is a vital step in recovery; admitting my powerlessness to drugs and that I am not God. I thought of drugs and alcohol as my God, and my whole life was about getting and using. I had to control the way I felt cause I did not live on life’s terms. Step 2 is believing God exists and that he can restore me to sanity. To do so, I have to take Step 3, which is to turn my life over to the care of God."

Healing Hands in the Garden
Written by current resident, F.D.
"When I first arrived at Pelgrims Place, I was assigned to work in the lands. I always loved gardening, but for years I hadn’t had time to pause, take time and live in the moment. The last 3 months spent connecting with Mother Nature and getting my hands dirty have been a truly rewarding experience. Finding peace with myself has been remarkable.
Looking back, just 3 months later and seeing the progress made in the gardens is amazingly rewarding. Planting new seeds, nurturing them to produce a bountiful harvest, pruning and maintaining ‘tomato alley’ and building trellises that will stand for years to come. I really can’t stress how spending a few hours a day in the garden has helped in my recovery."

Our Story

Pelgrims Place is a male recovery centre based in Paternoster, WC. We are a centre built and run by Healing Wings, who have over 20 years experience in rehabilitating and helping people who have struggled with substance abuse and addiction. Because our centre strips away the pressures of the outside world, goes back to the fundamentals and basics of rehabilitation and uses our wealth of knowledge in therapy and recovery programs, we are able to offer our program at an incredibly affordable rate. Our program is a minimum of six months, as it is our belief that the most effective form of rehabilitation is long term. We believe everybody has the right to get the help they need and the ability to overcome addiction.
