High tension/pressure glaucoma is mostly characterized by sudden onset of severe pain in the affected eye(s), it is often accompanied by severe headache and nausea. Some people present with mild to moderate pain in the affected eye(s)over a longer period of time. Pressure inside the eye is always high and the damage is quick especially to those who have mild to moderate pain since they take time to seek medical attention. It is caused by reduced fluid drainage out of the eye. There are number one causes to the reduced drainage such as eye injuries (old and new), dense cataracts, HIV and diabetes complications and many more. This is a medical emergency due to pain and threat to vision. It is therefore important to visit your optometrist or ophthalmologist if you experience pain in the eye to minimize the damage in case you have glaucoma.

Normal pressure glaucoma is when the pressure is within the normal range but the damage on the nerve continues. Unfortunately the patient does not feel or see anything, at the first glance of visual disturbances half of the nerve is damaged and the damage is irreversible. Hence normal pressure glaucoma is the most dangerous in terms of destruction of vision. Central vision is the vision we use to appreciate color and see fine details like reading fine print. Peripheral vision is the one we use to look at side mirrors when we drive or see the ground when we walk without turning our heads much. Glaucoma damage happens on the peripheral vision first leaving a person with what is called tunnel vision, thereby ruling them off many professions. Regular eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist of the back of the eye is the cheapest way to screen for glaucoma.
