KwaMashu E SAPS: PREMIER NTULI COMMENDS DECREASE IN CRIME AT KWAMASHU.

The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal and Community Safety and Liaison Executive Authority, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, has received a detailed briefing on prevalent crime trends and ongoing crime prevention interventions aimed at curbing criminality in KwaMashu and surrounding areas.

This engagement forms part of the Premier’s intensified crime prevention strategy under the auspices of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster.

According to the latest SAPS report, KwaMashu has recorded a notable reduction in key crime categories. Carjacking incidents have dropped from 62 to 38 compared to the same period in 2024, while murder cases have decreased from 59 to 54.

In addition, 28 illegal fi****ms have been recovered by KwaMashu SAPS following a series of targeted crime prevention operations. “I must commend the excellent work done by the KwaMashu police. The decrease in crime statistics is a positive turning point in our endeavour to build safer communities,” said Premier Ntuli.

Despite the encouraging decline, police management expressed concern about persistent crime hotspots, including the men’s hostel, Isolezwe, Dumisani Makhaye Highway, and sections K and C.

Premier Ntuli also emphasized the urgent need for improved environmental design to support law enforcement efforts, particularly through enhanced street lighting and the clearing of overgrown bushes that impede police patrols.

The Premier underscored the importance of collaborative, integrated crime prevention interventions involving law enforcement agencies, the business sector, and community crime prevention structures to deter criminal activity across the province.

As part of his community engagement programme, Premier Ntuli will meet with community safety structures at Ekuvukeni Anglican Church, followed by a Crime Combating Imbizo at the KwaMashu Indoor Sports Centre.

In a concerted effort to strengthen border security, curb the influx of undocumented immigrants, and combat the smuggling of illicit goods, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli visited the Golela Border Post, a key port of entry between KwaZulu-Natal and eSwatini.

During the visit, Premier Ntuli engaged with customs officials to explore practical measures to eliminate the rampant criminal activities undermining the economies of both KwaZulu-Natal and eSwatini. He commended the use of advanced technology − particularly drones − in enhancing border surveillance and combating cross-border crime. The Premier also applauded the strong collaboration among various departments working together to address these challenges.

As the Executive Authority responsible for the Department of Community Safety and Liaison, Premier Ntuli continued his crime-fighting mission with an Operation Siyahlola visit to the Ingwavuma Police Station. There, he assessed the challenges faced by law enforcement in the area. Expressing dissatisfaction with the poor state of the police station, the Premier committed to engaging with the Minister of Police to improve its condition.

Following discussions with the Ingwavuma Police Station management, Premier Ntuli proceeded to the Bhambanana Community Hall, where he met with local community safety structures who are working tirelessly to protect residents from crime.

Before this engagement, the Premier held a special meeting with traditional leaders of Umkhanyakude, focusing on pressing crime issues − particularly the theft of motor vehicles often smuggled into neighboring countries.

Premier Ntuli’s busy day in the Umkhanyakude District Municipality concluded with the Crime-Fighting Imbizo at Jaba Jaba Sports Field in the Jozini Local Municipality, where he engaged community members on critical safety concerns and ongoing efforts to tackle crime in the district.
