Search and Rescue Operation β 80 Nautical Miles South of Mossel Bay
In the early hours of 01 March 2026, Global Medical Safety & Risk Solutions (GMSRS), through our Medevac Africa division, was activated by MRCC Cape Town to assist in a maritime search and rescue operation involving the tug LEO.
The crew of 18 had been forced to abandon the vessel after it took on water and later sank. Vessels in the vicinity began responding to the distress, with additional support coordinated through MRCC.
Together with our aviation partners, Cape Town Helicopters and Cape Town Aviation, we placed aerial assets on standby, including fixed-wing aircraft which were deployed to support search efforts and on-scene coordination.
Despite challenging conditions, 12 survivors were rescued, 1 individual was recovered deceased, and 5 remain unaccounted for.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected and thank every agency, crew, and vessel involved in this multi-agency effort.
Special thanks to MRCC, the South African Weather Service (SAWS), Flight Information Services (FIS), and all maritime responders.
