Plett parents, here’s what you should know about hand, foot and mouth .🌿👶✨
⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄ ⋄As many of you may know, Hand, Foot & Mouth does the rounds about once or twice a year and while it can look a little scary, it’s actually one of the mildest childhood illnesses.
Here’s what you really need to know 🩷
▫️What it is:A common little virus that spreads easily in crèches, playdates and classrooms. Not related to the animal disease at all, just a normal childhood bug most kids will probably get at some stage.
▫️What to look for:Tiny spots or blisters on the hands, feet and around the mouth, mild fever, a bit of a runny nose, and sometimes mouth ulcers that make eating tricky.
▫️The good news:It clears on its own in about a week to two weeks. Truly. Kids bounce back so quickly. Their immune systems learn from it and that’s a good thing.
▫️Comfort at home:Cool drinks, ice lollies, soft foods, lots of cuddles and Panado/Nurofen if needed. Oat baths help with the itch. No antibiotics - it’s viral.🩷
▫️When they can go back:Once the fever is gone and they feel like themselves again, they can return to school or crèche - even if a few spots are still hanging around.
▫️Why it seems so common here:Busy little hands touching, playing, learning, exploring, especially in a small town full of beaches, playgrounds and holiday visitors. Completely normal.
❕When to check in with us:If they’re struggling to drink, seem very lethargic, the fever lasts more than 3 days, or the rash looks infected.🩷
You’re doing a wonderful job, parents.
HFMD looks dramatic, but it’s gentle and your little one will be just fine.🤍🌿
