Talk to your kids. Talking about the dangers of substance use and showing disapproval of such
behavior are key factors in preventing drug and alcohol use. Talk in your home, during meals, in
the car, at the game. Always keep the lines of communication open.

The Allure and Consequences of Drug Use:

Drugs are often seen as an escape route from reality, a way to numb pain or experience an altered state of consciousness. However, this temporary relief comes at a high cost. Prolonged drug use can lead to addiction, a chronic disease characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences. It affects the brain’s structure and function, causing long-term cognitive impairment, emotional instability, and physical health problems.

Substance abuse encompasses a harmful pattern of use of alcohol, to***co products, and illegal drugs; this includes the presence of substance use and trade within school and campus environments and during school-related activities.

The use of alcohol, to***co, and other illegal drugs undermines students’ ability to achieve success academically. Substance abuse is associated with other harmful behaviors, and is incompatible with a school climate of respect, safety, and support for learning.
