Exercise aims to increase muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness and will add to a patients sense of wellbeing. Muscle weakness must be addressed and exercises are constructed accordingly to build stamina and reduce fatigue.

GUIDELINES FOR OBESITY

Obesity is preventable. It can be managed and treated with a range of lifestyle changes.
DIET: Aim to reduce the consumption of processed foods, often high in saturated fats, sugar and salt. instead eat foods such as fruits, vegetables, wholegrain, nuts, dairy, seeds and lean meat.·
Focus should be on calorie deficit.
Manage STRESS: The increased release of cortisol, our “stress hormone”, can trigger overeating and weight gain around our abdominal region.
SLEEP: Lack of sleep places additional stress on the body, which in turn can lead to weight gain or retention.
EXERCISE
Primary mode of exercises should include a combination of aerobic and resistance training. Based on exercising at the right intensity and duration to maximize energy expenditure during exercise. Exercises such as water activities (e.g. hydrotherapy), sitting aerobics and stationary cycling is also recommended.
For adults who are obese an individualized approach to increasing physical activity is best achieved through exercise supervised by a professional (Biokineticist) who takes into account your current level of fitness, any current medical conditions, whilst also reducing your risk of injury.
