We diagnose, manage, and treat conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system. Examine eyes and visual system, diagnose problems or impairments, prescribe corrective lenses, and provide treatment. May prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat specific eye conditions.We assess patients' eyes to identify vision defects, diseases, and injuries. Their duties include maintaining medical files, evaluating eye defects, recording treatment plans, and performing eye inspections. Candidates must have a license from the state in which they wish to practice.We examine, diagnose, treat, and manage disorders of the visual system, eye diseases, and injuries. We prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses as needed. We spend much of our time providing specialized care, particularly if they are working in a group practice with other optometrists or physicians. We mostly treat patients with only partial sight, a condition known as low vision.
