In honour of WORLD STROKE DAY as well as AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) Awareness month, we have made sure that the hospitals we serve are stocked up on communication boards!
A hospital communication board allows patients with limited or no verbal ability, especially post-stroke, to express their needs and participate in their own care. In a hospital environment where miscommunication can have serious consequences, AAC boards provide a low-tech method for communication.
AAC boards can aid patients with reducing frustration and anxiety by giving them a way to voice their needs, helping to decrease their anxiety and improve their emotional well-being.
The board can also aid with increased autonomy and control by enabling patients to make choices and express their preferences. AAC boards give them a sense of control over their hospital stay. This promotes dignity and independence, even for those with severe communication difficulties.
