You nurse your babies with one arm,
and carry the weight of your world with the other.

You do it with no glider chair.
No lactation consultant.
No fancy pump or freezer stash.

You do it under trees.
In fields.
In the heat.
In the dust.
In the middle of life that doesn’t pause just because you’re feeding.

You nourish through droughts and war zones.
You breastfeed while walking miles for water.
You protect. You provide. You persevere.

You are the definition of resilience.
The face of strength.
The heartbeat of your community.

We see you.
We honor you.
This World Breastfeeding Week, may your strength echo louder than borders.

I decided to open up & share something a little bit more personal this breastfeeding week. In hopes that it will help educate others on this topic! May this also be a reminder that support is EVERYTHING for a breastfeeding mother. Support from family, friends, healthcare professionals and the general public/community too. 🫶🏻

The Solids Store: Giving you a confident start. 👶🏻

After working on a website for a few weeks- my online guides that I have created over the years are now available to purchase online! I am passionate about helping parents on their journey and giving them the knowledge to confidently feed their infant/child nutritious food.

My guides are updated and have been put together using evidence-based information and guidelines, created by a Registered Dietitian and mom. 🧡

I currently have the following guides online to purchase:
•Introducing solids
•Baby-led weaning and finger foods
•Healthy lunchboxes

Addressing 3 common expectations I see with moms: Breastfeeding will come naturally; breastfeeding is painful, push through the pain; breastfeeding will be the same on both sides.

From Gauteng to Eastern Cape and spotlight SACLC Amber Kelly in Gqeberha! 💛When the baby latches onto the breast, a seal is created. The tongue and jaw movements draw milk into the mouth using suction and compression. Milk pools in the back of the mouth as the baby sucks rhythmically. Once enough milk collects, the baby triggers a swallow reflex. 💛 The soft palate rises to close off the nasal passages. The epiglottis covers the windpipe (trachea) to prevent milk from entering the lungs. Muscles in the throat contract to push milk down the oesophagus and into the stomach. (Sakalides _&Geddes)

Today was such a special day, we had our first South African Certified Lactation Consultants workshop in PE and I got to meet the ladies that have mentored me over the last couple of years: Hettie Souman Grove, Heather Jepson and Eloïse Swanepoel. What a lovely workshop, thank you for organising Lize van Wyk 🙌🏻

SCHOOL HOLIDAY TIP:

Continue to pack them lunch/snackboxes daily. Why?

1️⃣ Helps keep kids in a routine
2️⃣ Avoids unnecessary/boredom snacking throughout the day
3️⃣ Helps keep snacks (mostly) healthy

Do you do this for your kids during holidays?

It’s World Breastfeeding Week! Let’s chat about giving breastfeeding moms the support that they need. 🤱

Thinking back on my journey with both of my babies, I am grateful for the support I received from:
•My family
•My husband
•My friends, even those who weren’t breastfeeding themselves
•My lactation consultant
•My paediatrician
•My workplace at the time

Support = success. It is extremely difficult to have a successful breastfeeding journey without the support. Moms NEED support! This doesn’t only include the hands on/physical/emotional/financial support but even extends to members of the public who can support a breastfeeding mom just by making her feel comfortable breastfeeding her baby in public.

Take a moment today to think about how you as a friend, spouse, family member, employer and/or member of the public can better support breastfeeding mothers to help them have a successful breastfeeding journey.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and again and again… serve dessert WITH meals! Crazy right… Or is it?

The scenario here was on a Sunday afternoon at lunch time. We had cake in the house and my son asked for a slice of cake around lunch time. So instead of giving it after his lunch, I dished a small portion and served it WITH his lunch. But why?

🍰 This takes away the idea of dessert being a superior food and makes it just another equal food group on their plate
🍰 This takes away the pressure/obsession of rushing through their food to get dessert
🍰 This takes away the concept of bribery to get children to eat their food
🍰 This stops them from finishing their food just to empty their plate rather than listening to their body’s sign of fullness

The first few times they’ll probably eat dessert first- and this is okay. They’ll likely surprise you and eat their other food after! Maybe they’ll even surprise you and grab the other food before they even touch their dessert. Give it a try sometime. 🍽️
