*The diary of an undertaker:*
I worked in various industries, non-profit organisations, government, and the private sector.

To accomodate clients and keep the business running a standby system is in use so that organisation runs continuously. What is common is the rotation of men and women to be on standby so that it doesn't affect one person or same people. It is a norm that an allowance is given to those that are on stand-by, for it takes a sacrifice to be on standby. Your movement is limited, and your condition ( I guess you know what I mean,lol) should be under serious control._

Eventually, I landed in this industry, an industry that knows no hour of the day or night (umntu ubusy qha).

Being an undertaker really requires someone to be available 24/7 and be sober, of mind and spirit, as we do not know when death may strike and we may be needed. I mean, it does not matter how big your business is… The fact that one has staff does not preclude them from receiving calls at anytime of the day or night, as some people know your personal number and will call you directly in their time of need (am talking about the owner). For us in this industry, rest is a luxury. I believe this kind of business is for the called.

I have decided to start a weekly reflection where I will share some of the experiences in this line of business, hoping that readers will take from it something valuable, be it an understanding of the context in which we operate - a peak into the challenges and some insights into the fulfilments; the silver linings that become the wind beneath our wings as we navigate these truly important and big moments in every family’s lives.
