I am a physiotherapist specialising in orthopaedics , sports injuries (both diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, post-surgical, prevention), and hospital visits (lung physiotherapy, post-operative lungs, back and neck rehabilitation and mobility rehabilitation). Please consult your physiotherapist or doctor before doing any exercise program if you have pain that is more than discomfort. Severe pain in any exercise is never good. Your physiotherapist can guide you how to do exercises and can be seen as first contact practitioners in order for your medical aid to pay. Physiotherapy helps to diagnose, treat and work out prevention strategies of injuries often reported by runners.

Did you know that physiotherapists are trained to diagnose and use physical therapy and rehabilitation programmes to determine the cause of running injuries?

Therefor the majority of medical aids in South Africa accept a physiotherapist as a first contact-practitioner and you do not necessarily need a referral letter from a medical doctor to visit your physiotherapist. Physiotherapists are trained to know when to refer patients to other medical professionals such as when medication or surgery become a necessity and this will never be compromised as we as a team are responsible for the patients' wellbeing.

Here is the second of a few Pilates videos I am sharing. IMPORTANT: AS WITH ANY OTHER TREATMENT YOU SHOULD CHECK WITH YOUR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER THAT YOU DOES NOT HAVE ANY MEDICAL CONDITION WHICH CONTRA-INDICATES MOVEMENTS AS SHOWN HERE.

This video challenges the more athletic people who think they need a little bit more work on the abdominals... including the "lockdowned" runners who are currently only allowed to exercise within the boundaries of their home walls! Tomorrow I will share some Pilates for the older / more vulnerable people.

In my opinion, this video suits the young healthy adult well, but the older person will also benefit from it, provided that NOT ONE SINGLE MOVEMENT MUST BE FORCED INTO ANY LEVEL OF PAIN (therefore stop as soon as you experience more than discomfort!) ,
and
every exercise must be done slowly (after all Pilates is the Art of Contrology") - i.e. no momentum must be exerted at any stage.

NS: A person that suffers current active sciatica or nerve root pain should exercise caution, and would probably benefit by seeing a physiotherapist who will personally adapt these exercises to the specific person's need, as people's back problems are different.
