NMB ELECTRICTY OUTAGE -MAYOR SAYS GIVE US 14 DAYS TO REPAIR INFRASTRUCTURE. CITY TO LOADSHED/ LOAD REDUCE TO TRY AND SHARE AVAILABLE ELECTRICITY
(Don’t shoot the messenger!)
The Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Cllr Babalwa Lobishe, together with the Acting City Manager, Adv. Lonwabo Ngoqo, and the Acting Executive Director for Electricity and Energy, Mr Bernhardt Lamour, conducted a oversight visit at the Bethelsdorp–Greenbushes 132kV overhead power line where two towers collapsed due to vandalism combined with adverse weather conditions, resulting in the power outage experienced.
Municipal technical teams are currently on site working under challenging conditions to repair the damage and restore electricity supply. During the site visit, the Executive Mayor indicated that a 14-day deadline, effective from today, has been set for the restoration of the affected infrastructure. All necessary resources have been mobilised to ensure that repairs are completed as safely and efficiently as possible within this timeframe.
Residents were also advised that, as part of system management and load balancing during the repair period, there is a possibility of implementing a two-hour load reduction schedule in affected areas. The Municipality will communicate the relevant schedules in advance.
The Municipality has once again strongly condemned acts of infrastructure vandalism, which continue to place immense strain on critical services and negatively affect communities across Nelson Mandela Bay. Residents will be kept informed through regular updates as work progresses.
